With Halloween being this week, our “Warcor in training” Ray wanted to run a themed tournament. It was actually a very exciting event for several reasons. 1st this was our first tournament in our local Infinity community. 2nd Our community just started with Ray and I just about a year ago and the local support and interest has been amazing and now we can run tournaments! 3rd Being a 3 round tournament meant there were going to be time limits, which we’ve never done before. 4th It was a ton of fun!

We were running a 3 round 2 hour per game tournament using a blend of previous Corvus Belli themed missions with ITS season 10 rules, and a couple of extras we threw in to make it interesting and fun.

Everyone threw their names in a hat and I was gonna be up again Josh and his nomads for the first round. We threw dice and I won Lt roll and told Josh to deploy first. He wanted turn and we were off from there.

Deployment

Nomads

Josh threw down a Kriza and Mary on the left behind cover. A Warcor and Jaguar on left middle with Warcor on a building. Taskmaster was in the middle with Lupe in cover with an Intruder and HMG bot on the building in front of them. The right side had the Chimera gang all sprawled out ready to run at me! His reserve was Bran who stuck the landing right behind my Myrmidon. He elected his Kriza to be his Candytracker (Datatracker).

ALEPH

Myrmidon, Sophotect and Zayin TR bot on my left side with a Yudbot hanging out as well. Achilles, Danavas, and 2nd Myrmidon hung around the middle building while the Krakot was up on the right side. I threw my Naga Killer Hacker prone in a tower on the left, while my FO just hung out behind a building my right. My Posthumans were my reserve (big surprise) which was important since it was after his Bran landed. So my Proxy Mk.4 HRL was on the back center building, while my Proxy Mk.5 went prone on the middle center (FD lvl 2 is bananas on that guy). I elect Achilles to be my Candytracker (Datatracker) and with that we were off!

Turn 1

Top of  1 – Nomads

First thing, Zombies want brains! Most move towards my Mk.5 and the right ones toward the Krakot. Josh wastes little time and starts with his Chimera gang moving up the board. It takes him a couple orders since everyone is hitting/entering difficult terrain. Lupe moves up and throws some smoke out to cover the Intruders attack vector. Intruder moved out of cover into smoke and starts doing what it does best, MSV2-ing me in the face. He’s targeting the Mk. 4 since he wants to move his Bran that’s in front of the HRL Proxy. It takes a couple orders but I eventually fail a dodge and an ARM so I elect to go prone instead of lose the Mk. 4.

Bran quickly uses his monkey staff and wallops my Myrmidon over the head knocking him out. My Yudbot on the left activates it’s comm and beeps a lot to alert others. My ALEPH forces pay little attention to the lonely bot, but the Krakot Merc I hired figures he wouldn’t want to miss a chance for battle so he change-faces around to see Bran. Joshua doesn’t want to worry about chest mines or SMG’s or anything so he just hangs out. He does spend an order to throw the Intruder back into CAMO though.

Mary starts doing her acrobatics and is cartwheeling up and over a building. Josh double moves her since he doesn’t see any ARO threats. His 2nd moves puts Mary in range of my Killer hacking Naga! “Haha, an easy kill for the Naga”, I foolishly thought in my head as my hacker wiffs with an 20 on his WIP. Mary then takes an order and elects to punish me for my efforts and my Naga’s brain melts after failing his FtF with her.

Meanwhile the Chimera gang gets up a building ending their 2nd move in LoF of my other Naga, who reveals to drop a mine. Josh ponders for a bit but wants to get his unit up and will “hopefully” weather the storm of shrapnel. The team moves very carefully and the mine goes off, but only covers two pupniks in the blast. However the controller makes her way into the open and gets into a FtF with my Naga. I get some good rolls and the controller goes down and one of the pupniks dies to the mine.

Josh wants to kill more but is low on orders. His Kriza comes out to play and gets into a fight with my TR bot. My bot can’t handle the Kriza even with the Saturation zone lowering both our bursts, my bot is very outgunned and goes unconscious. Josh spends his Lt order throwing the Kriza into suppression and passes turn.

Bottom of 1 – ALEPH

Zombies! In a backfire move, 3x of the Zombies walk towards Bran who is in my DZ now which will makes things harder for Josh. My Krakot then uses his Impetuous order and SMG’s Bran off the board. After that my left Myrmidon wants to make Achilles life a little easier so he spends a couple orders and drops 2 smoke templates. Achilles carefully moves through smoke to avoid: Mary hacking him, the Kriza shooting him, the Warcor shooting him. I do have to make the most of my turn so Achilles finally leaves smoke and ARO’s are everywhere. Luckily the Warcor misses and Mary fails her pitcher towards me. I get into a shootout with the Kriza and put a wound on it. Josh retreats back to cover ending his suppressive fire.

Achilles smells blood and wants more, he goes again, but this time Mary gets her pitcher off, but luckily the Warcor isn’t in LoF anymore. The Kriza passes ARM and Achilles grumbles. I don’t want to activate Achilles since there’s a pitcher right next to him, so it becomes time for the Mk. 5 to throw is life away to keep the Blonde-bombshell-murder-machine going!

My Mk.5 Stands up and has 4x ARO’s coming at him. Mary, Warcor, Intruder reveals to shoot, and the HMG Bot. At this point all I want to do it blast away the pitcher but Josh starts his rolls. Mary – Miss, Warcor – Miss, Intruder – Miss, HMG – 2 Hits. I throw dice and pass 1 ARM and go into NWI. Josh and I are both stunned and shocked the Mk.5 didn’t get blasted into 100 pieces. My Proxy wipes the coolant from it’s brow and blasts away the pitcher.

I’m about out of orders but I want the Kriza dead, Achilles spends about 2 more orders on the Kriza while Mary is missing her SMG shots. The Kriza is invincible and passes all ARM saves. With that it’s the top of 2.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – Nomads

Zombies move and as I had planned/hoped 1 walks right into Achilles! As much as I want to use MA4 I take the “mathematically superior” choice to use MA3 instead. I get a Crit, but the dang Undead passes his other 2 ARM saves. Well now Achilles is a sitting duck stuck in combat with a zombie.

Time for Mary to go to work on Achilles! Josh moves her into range and begins a massive order investment to IMM my Achilles and keep him from attacking on my turn. It takes Josh 4 orders to IMM the warrior and he can finally go on to other tasks.

The Intruder goes to take out the Krakot but Josh forgets there’s a Mk.5 with 2x SMG’s just hanging out in the open. But his Intruder is far away, and in cover so he doesn’t worry about it. The Krakot gets blasted and the downtown SMG shot rolls a 4 and actually shocks the Intruder off the table!

Mary does her cartwheel thing down a wall and becomes another target for the Mk.5, but Josh elects to dodge this time and trusts his ODD. He wiffs the dodge roll and the SMG hit lands with a 1. Mary gets shocked off the Table!

Kriza walks up and blast the Mk.5 away…for good.

Kriza turns the corner and takes out the smoke throwing Myrmidon. Kriza flexes muscles and Josh passes turn.

Bottom of 2 – ALEPH

Zombies flail about, but our TO – Ray has informed us we’re almost at the time limit so we’ll just have enough to finish off Turn 2. I have a brief panic attack and just start the quickest turn of Infinity I can. My Sophotect repairs my TR bot and the bot goes to shoot at the Kriza. I win but Kriza passes ARM (Invincible) and drops back into cover.

I’ve got just enough orders for a last chance play. The Sophotect starts up the “Chariots of Fire” music in her headset and begins the run across the table, through difficult terrain. She is almost to Achilles and is able to run into to base him but the Kriza gets a shot off and knocks her to NWI. It’s ok because with my last order she throws dice and passes the Eng roll to un-IMM Achilles!

Now he’s back with his Candytracker Irregular order and his LT order. He shreds the zombie to gooey bits in front of him and uses his Lt order to blast the Kriza who….passes ARM (AHHHHH!) We run the numbers and tally points after our 2 turn game and it’s a:

ALEPH Victory 7 – 1

After the first game we broke for lunch. When I got back to the shop I was off to face against Clint and his Tohaa. I lost the roll off but Clint wanted to go second. I told him to deploy first and we were off from there!

Deployment

Tohaa

Clint threw a Triad on the left of 2x Gao-Rael and Kaeltar. Middle was another triad of Makaul, (which was his reserve) Kaeltar and Sukeul. Next to them behind cover was the Kerail and her beasts. And on the right side was the third triad of Neema, Ectros, and Keesan. I think his Neema was the Candytracker, and then it was my turn to throw models on the table.

ALEPH

I tossed Achilles and the Krakot as far up the left side as i could. TR bot with Yudbot on the roof with Danavas below. Myrmidon and sophotect in the middle behind various boxes. 2nd Myrmidon on the right side with a Yudbot and Proxy Mk. 4 on roof and Proxy Mk. 5 waaaay up the right side of the board. (Proxies were my reserve again, cause obviously). Naga FO went on the left middle near the pumpkin. Hacker on the right Middle near the other pumpkin. I made my Sophotect my Candytracker and we were ready.

Turn 1

Top of 1 – ALEPH

Lets get messy! Krakot Impetuous order moves up and idles just behind the wall where the Gao-Rael is. I spend another order to fling him into combat berserking along the way and using his chest mines in CC to hopefully roll a crit. I’m on CC 30 at this point, but I roll a 5. Clint pops the mate and the Krakot horribly dies to the Gao-Rael and Kaeltar who shotgunned him coming in.

Let’s try this again, Achilles time! Basically a repeat since Achilles fails his FtF takes a wound, and takes a shotgun crit from the Kaeltar. Thank goodness he has 3 wounds. Spend a few more orders to not roll bad and kill the Gao and Kaeltar but am less cocky to go after the other mated Gao-Rael around the corner.

I spend 2x command tokens/coordinated orders moving up Mk. 5, both Myrmidons, the Sophotect, Naga FO, and Achilles, all to get them in better positions for future turns. Once the FO Naga got up around the wall (the Gao discovered him coming in), then began a couple order shoutout where in the end the mate was popped and the Naga fell back behind the wall. I then put Achilles, the Naga, the Proxy Mk. 5 into suppressive fire and passed turn.

Bottom of 1 – Tohaa

Time for some Tohaa Heavy Infantry. Clint really wants to take out my Proxy Mk.5 so he activates the Neema triad to move into a fairly open building to start their trek. He knows there’s a Myrmidon with a chain rifle in front of him, but he admitted (after our game) that he got “tunnel vision” and didn’t look up the board to see the Proxy Mk.4 with HRL who would also be blasting away. It got really messy, nothing was dead, but Neema was down 1 Wound from her armor and the other Ectros lost both Wounds from his armor due to being in the blast and dealing with fire ammo.

Clint was now exposed but also committed to getting into better position. He activated Neema again and moved his triad around the building more, keeping Hatail back to avoid the constant shootout. Neema throws a burst 2 Pazerfaust at the Mk.4, while I take a free shot at the Ectros and more Chain rifle from the Myrm. Honestly for as crazy a shoot out it could have been, all that happened was the Mk.4 took 1 Wound (I got really lucky with Clint missing 1 of the unopposed pazer shots and passing 2 ARM on the one that hit).

Tactics change and other units move out! The Kertail and her beasts move up and the Myrmidon freaks out and throws smoke to block the sight of them. With Clint’s 2nd Mov, one of the beasts walks out into view/range of the Naga in suppressive fire, but his free shots all go wild. Only having to deal with the Naga Clint moves up the Kertail and attempts to throw all the smoke to block both the incoming Naga shots, and the Mk.4 from further HRL shots. Rolls go south for Clint and no smoke goes down and the Kertails mate is popped.

Neema wants to kill things! She breaks off using her Lt. order and flies around the corner to shoot at the Myrmidon and the Proxy Mk.5 in the back. My Mk.5 sits still while the Mk.4 tries more HRL and the Myrmidon Chain Rifle’s his little heart out. The HRL misses, Clint passes ARM and the Myrm dies, while the Mk.5 only takes 1W and goes to NWI and spins in place for free, keeping it’s suppressive fire. I can’t remember if Neema activated again, or it was one of the first orders of my turn, but she didn’t make it and the Mk.5 was still kicking.

Clint has his Makaul team move up and out of cover throwing eclipse grenades everywhere and trying to get better position. They are mostly out of LoF of my ARO pieces and they end up facing several directions in a very “come at me bro” stance. With that Clint passes turn.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – ALEPH

No time to waste and fortune favors the brave! Achilles uses his Impetuous order to move up and blast away the remaining Gao-Rael. Wanting more action Achilles moves up again and fires at the Makaul team, I think I pop the mate of the Sukeul but the Makaul definitely dodges towards me (remember kids, if someone is coming closer to you, there’s probably a reason). Achilles tries to take more shots at the Sukuel, while the Makaul drops a heavy flamer which also covers the hapless Naga behind Achilles. The Naga burns horribly while Achilles passes ARM and holds his advance.

The Mk.4 HRL the remaining Ectros off the table. The Mk.5 (from before either kills Neema or she’s already dead) moves around the corner to slice the pie and see the Kertail controller and blasts her to Unconscious.

I get worried Clint might be in retreat at the bottom of 2 so I start rushing people to touch the Halloween objectives. The Myrm on the left, touches the left pumpkin, the Sophotect touches the middle Cauldron, and the CAMO Naga on the right reveals and both flips the right pumpkin switch and is now touching it. I have 1 order left and the TR bot shuffles around to shoot at the Makaul fireteam again, but there’s just more dodging and everyone gets closer to Achilles.

Bottom of 2 – Tohaa

Clint is keeping his cool and moves Hatail with Viral Combit out to see the Mk.4 HRL. I believe all his orders are spent on the shootout trying to finish off the Proxy. He even pulls some cool triangulated fire actions to help being at long range. The Proxy proves to be a tough nut to crack and eventually finishes off the Hatail. With that it’s back to me.

Turn 2

Top of 3 – ALEPH

Achilles Impetuous order moves up shooting wildly knocking off the armor of the Sukeul while tanking more flamer hits from the Makaul. I decide to just run past the Sukuel and Makaul and go straight into melee with the Kaeltar figuring it would knock Clint into LoL on his turn. Achilles takes out the Kaeltar but dies in a literal blaze of glory as he is covered in flamer fire and takes a crit from the Sukuel on his dash in.

My Sophotect spends a couple orders running over to the left pumpking to flip the switch, then runs back to the center caldron since she’s my Candytracker. My TR bot shuffles around and takes more shots at the remaining 2 models of Clints force, but doesn’t land any hits. I think I spend an order on the Danavas to throw Marksmanship on the bot and pass turn.

Bottom of 3 – Tohaa

Clint is in Retreat and LoL, but has command tokens left to spend on his units to ignore all of it. He just straight runs his remaining units toward the left pumpkin to touch it and deny me a victory point. The TR bot managed to knock out the Makaul on the way up, but the Sukeul gets in safe and with that it’s a:

ALEPH Victory 8 – 0

Feeling pretty confident we have about 10 min before the third and Final round. I find out I’m on top table against Scott and his Haqq. I win the roll off and elect to go first, while Scott has me deploy first, and away we went!

Deployment

ALEPH

Left side was a Lamedh and one of my TR bots with a Yudbot on a building. Achilles on a small building on left middle. Rudra, Myrmidon, and Proxy Mk.1 and 2nd Yudbot all over and around a building in the center. 2nd TR bot on a right building with the Danavas nearby. The usual Naga split with the FO on the left in the cove of an orange building, while the KHD Naga went prone on the right. The Proxy Mk.5 (and Mk.1 with Yudbots) were my reserve, which I put the Mk.5 waaay up on the left near his HVT for my Classified. I nominated Achilles to be the Candytracker.

Hassassin Bahram

Left side was a Barid with an AHD alongside an Ayyar which was masquerading as a Muyib both were prone on the stairs of the left building. On the Yellow building was his 5-man link team of Muyibs + Leila all kitted out with various weapons. The 2x Asawira were on the ground of the yellow building with the Spitfire behind some boxes, and the Doc+ around the corner. Scott’s Fiday was his reserve who showed up near my Danvas as a non-threatening “Bob from accounting”. His Doc+ Asawira was his Candytracker and we were off.

(Again I apologize for not taking pictures during correct times of game, or more pictures in general, it was a little overwhelming playing and getting pictures of all the games going on during my opponent’s turns throughout the tournament. This shot was taken at the Bottom of Turn 1)

Turn 1

Top of 1 – ALEPH

I roll the “haunted effet” die and we get Difficult Terrain. Yay all my 6-4 MOV of…not gonna matter. I actually make the most of it and spend 2x Command tokens and coordinated orders just climbing a lot of bots around and up the field. My 2x TR bots tak position at about the halfway mark, while the Rudra holds the middle on a building and the Lamedh (who has multiterrain for some crazy reason) just speeds up the board on the left side with that 6-6 MOV.

Achilles time! I spend the all the remaining orders + the Candy Tracker order + the Lt order to get Achilles up the field and melee and kill both the Asawira’s. I hadn’t planned on such a commitment but Achilles was having a hard time in Melee and did take a wound, but he knocked out Scott’s Candytracker and earned his points back. With that I passed turn.

Bottom of 1 – HB

Leila double crawls down some stairs to avoid standing and being seen by the TR bot. She then spends an order to round the corner and breaker pistol Achilles in the face. The Murder-machine is caught off guard and goes Unconscious. Scott doesn’t want any chance of me getting back up and also wants to complete his classified so Leila runs over and steps on Blonde’s neck.

The Fiday shuffles around a bit but isn’t seen by anyone. Scott’s Barid hacker throws a pitcher, then spends an order and puts my Lamedh into IMM-1. His Ayyar then goes up the stairs and gets into a shootout with my TR up on the right building. That surprise shot level 2 is no joke and my bot goes Unconscious. With that Scott’s out of orders and it’s time to see who has what quadrants?

Most of Scott’s forces are still in his DZ and the Fiday is getting beaten out by the Rudra. I’ve got 3 zones to his 0, so 2 points for me.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – ALEPH

I roll the dice and we get Difficult Terrain again. I’m also in LoL at this point and spend my orders shuffling around some units. I do use the Danavas order to throw Marksmanship up on my TR bot near my Lamedh. Then the TR blasts away the Barid Hacker. I eat the remaining command tokens for my Proxy Mk.1 to run across the board, while the Yudbot standing near the middle of the board runs as fast it can up many stairs all the way to the down TR bot. I just managed to get into base for the Eng roll, but fail the Wip and knock the bot to Unconscious lvl 2. I secretly elect a new Lt (The Mk.5) then pass turn.

Bottom of 2 – HB

Time for Scott to take some units out! His Fiday runs around and he ends his 2nd Mov into melee with the Danavas. What free melee attack! Go Danavas! She wiffs terribly while the Myrm and Rudra are attempting to take shots but also missing horribly. Fiday shows her how it’s done by gutting her and my Myrm and Rudra once again look on helplessly and fire wildly. The Rudra hits, but Fiday passes ARM. Fiday smokes up and becomes “Bob from accounting” again.

The Ayyar finishes off the downed TR bot to make sure I don’t bring it back. He then crawls along the roof out of LoF to make more projections at the end of his turn. The Fireteam shuffles around their building with Leila moving up to the boxes previously occupied by the Asawira Spitfire. With that Scott passes turn and we count up zones.

He’s got 1 Fireteam member in his back corner, but everything else is still in his DZ (the Fiday now in my DZ). Now it’s 3 zones to 1, but it means another 2 points for me.

Turn 3

Top of 3 – ALEPH

Haunted dice roll – Low Vis Zone (bleh). Neither one of us has any MSV’s so it’s gonna be a low rolling shooting turn for both parties.

My new Lt. Proxy spends it’s Lt order to glare at the HVT in his ZoC, I can’t remember the name of it but I need to pass an 18 and rolled a 19. Another order later and I’ve got my Classified.

Time to see what this new profiled Rudra can do. I spend orders to have it zoom up the board and get into a firefight with Leila who was also the Team Leader of the 5-man link. With Low Vis and both of us in cover he’s on 12’s and I’m on 9’s but we are both rolling 4 dice. I get lucky after a couple orders and shock Leila off the table. I then move the Rudra up to the wall and fire out a mine near a Muyib on the ground who can’t see me (Mine dispenser is cool!). Rudra goes Rambo and climbs up the wall to see 2 more Muyib, one with a D.E.P. and one with a HRL. I split burst and beat out both units who then both fail ARM and get shocked off the table. I spend my last order to move the Rudra back down and face the corner incase the Mine doesn’t kill the other Muyib.

Bottom of 3 – HB

Scott has his Muyib move and dodge the mine. Then come around the corner to get into melee with my Rudra to my surprise. I don’t realize he has D-charges so I attempt to shot him coming in. He gets charges on me but I pass 2 ARM and take 1 Wound. He tries to do it again, but I managed to Electric Pulse him. He’s only got 1 order left, so he moves up his Ayyar to claim a zone and shoot up my 2nd TR bot, who can’t handle all the modifiers.

I won our first tournament! It was an awesome day with great people and good times had by all. I appreciate Ray being our TO for the day and keeping everyone on point with the 2 hour time limits. I look forward to the next one we are schedule to have after the holidays in January. If anyone is near Northern California, please come on out to our shop The Scruffy Nerd Herder!

 

Post Tournament Notes

I didn’t do post game notes this time around since there was so much going on and everyone was very much out of their “comfort zone”. So these will be overall notes from the day

  • One of the biggest recommendations I can make, is know/memorize your units/lists you bring. It helps a ton knowing what tools you have at your disposal and the stats to back them up. Plus it keeps the gaming fluid and quick.
  • 2 hours at first didn’t seem like enough time. But about halfway through my 2nd game, I was starting to feel the grove and now will be aiming to complete most my games in that amount of time
  • With no time to waste, people had to make quick tactical decisions. Sometimes they worked out well, sometimes they didn’t take the extra moment to look around for ARO’s or units that could affect them. I too was caught off guard several times, just gotta take a breath before each action.
  • Limited Insertion was a good call for our first tournament, made deployment and turns faster to get through the day. Hardly any games went past time and everyone was able to finish
  • The style of play I saw was mostly conservative considering the time constraints. Aside from infiltration units. Clint was the only opponent I played that got anything up to the halfway point of the table.
  • Hacking isn’t a big thing in our meta. My Danavas took 2 actions the whole tournament both of which were Marksmanship.
  • Was surprised by how “normal” the dice rolls were all day. I think I rolled 2 crits and saw 2 crits over the entire day. (lol this includes Achilles who was Critting on 13’s all day, 10 CC roles and he only rolled above 13 once. Not that he need the help, just a funny observation)
  • Achilles the blonde-bombshell himself was a ton of fun. I honestly haven’t played/practiced much with him in casual games because how “mean” he can be. He certainly didn’t disappoint, and throughout the day I got progressively more and more aggressive with him. I would recommend a Shukra or a Myrm Officer with CoC since he will go down and you’ll be in LoL. I also appreciated how simple he made my turns during the tournament. I just fed him orders and turned him loose.
  • Everyone was super friendly and awesome and kept a positive attitude throughout the day!
