Short Boards and Scatter Terrain

A good friend of mine from my old Infinity meta came to visit the weekend of the 2017 American Eclipse and brought along his Military Orders. He wanted to try a game on a short board making use of the scatter terrain that I had brought with me from our old meta. New buildings and old scatter terrain made for a nice trip down memory lane with an old friend.

Deployment

He deploys first, putting a Fusilier ML in overwatch on the left. His two possible Lt options are on opposite sides of the board, crammed into the corners behind buildings. He deploys his pair of Black Friars watching the main diagonal firelanes through the center, with his Order Sergeant link team blob smack dab in the center of his DZ. His Father Knight Spitfire sets up on my right behind some buildings.

I’m afraid of his Black Friars, so I put my Intruder out of Lof from anything next to a ladder. I leave the Jaguar Panzerfaust out to shoot at stuff in the middle. I tuck the EVO and Lunokhod into cover on either side of the board, and set up the Morlocks to roll up the board in relative safety. I put the Moira E/M LGL watching the right side of the board in case the Father Knight shows his face, and drop the Zero on the left, ready to push buttons or hack the Father Knight as he rolls up the board.I’ve got the Moran set up in the middle, prone, just to gum up the works if necessary and to provide white noise against the Black Friars. Since he doesn’t have any hackers on the table, I throw the Bandit KHD over the centerline to cause some trouble and stick the landing right in front of his link team and the Black Friar on the left. In response, he brings Konstantinos out of reserve and sticks him behind my Bandit on my left, and I drop a Krakot on the right.

Turn 1

Top of Turn 1 – Military Orders

I dock his second order pool with the two Black Friars two orders. He activates the Black Friar in front of my Bandit and declares discover + shoot. I manage to out dice him for both orders of shooting, but he passes ARM against my Bandit’s LSG. Konstantinos shoots the Bandit in the back because I’m not careful in my facing. Whoops!

Konstantinos tries to remove my Moran next, but the Moran dodges and my Jaguar nails him with a ADHL round and he’s just stuck there the whole game. Success!
The Father Knight advances up the board and hides around the corner before he’s exposed the forces on my right. He spends a few orders on the link team, shuffling them up the field and pushing the far center button with the Paramedic. He reveals a FO Order Sergeant out of TO near my Zero AHD, but the Jaguar stalls him out with some ADHL fire and some passed ARM rolls.

Bottom of Turn 1 – Nomads

My Morlocks advance, the left one dropping some all-important smoke for the Intruder. My Krakot makes a beeline for the Father Knight. I climb the Intruder up the ladder and drop the Fusilier ML and the FO Order Sergeant on the left near my Zero.

The Krakot drops a grenade on the Father Knight, actually causing a wound! Thanks, +3 PH Metachemistry roll! I use my last order of that group to coordinate my Morlocks into the center and chain rifle the FO Order Sergeant in the middle. That takes care of that problem for me, but I lose one of the Morlocks to return fire from the Black Friar guarding the main diagonal firelane.I drop in a Hellcat BSG behind the troublesome Friar and drop it, taking out a member of the Order Sergeant link team as well with an additional order. I’m almost out of orders, so I advance the Lunokhod, the Stempler, and the EVO, with the EVO and the Stempler getting ready to push buttons. The Stempler pushes its button and scoots up the field into an overwatch position.

Turn 2

Top of Turn 2 – Military Orders

The remaining Black Friar pushes up the field and tries to engage my Intruder. The Jaguar and the Intruder manage to drop it unconscious between the two of them. The link team spends an order dealing with the Hellcat, losing another member to the BSG template. The link team attempts to Paramedic both downed Black Friars, killing the one on the left but bringing back the one on the right (the one the Hellcat brought down originally). With his last order, he rolls the Father Knight spitfire around the corner and splits burst between the Lunokhod, the Stempler, the Krakot, and the Morlock. I lose the Krakot and the Stempler, but the Lunokhod, a Crazy Koala, and the Moira E/M him and blow him off the table.

Bottom of Turn 2 – Nomads

I try to take out the remaining Black Friar with a chain rifle, but the Morlock goes down and he passes his ARM.

I throw up some white noise with my Interventor on the way to pushing the right most button. My Interventor drops assisted fire on the Lunokhod, and the ‘bot shotguns the Black Friar off the table. I set it up to deal with the link team next turn before the EVO completes a line of pushed buttons for me and scoots into cover.

Turn 3

Top of Turn 3 – Military Orders

Down to a pair of Fusiliers and a 3-man link, and with only one button pushed, he concedes.

7-0 Nomad Victory!

Notes

  • All these games where I get screwed by facing, and I forget to position my Bandit properly. Shame on me! My Bandit doesn’t fail me, I fail my Bandit.
  • Hellcat BSG and impact templates are great, as usual.
  • Sacrificially splitting burst on a high-BS HI model like a Father Knight can be pretty effective! Suicidal, but effective!
  • Well-placed Jaguar Panzerfausts are very strong against things that aren’t HMGs. Clearly, the right answer is two Jaguar Panzerfausts versus HMGs.
  • Intruders MSRs are great scalpels. It’s still difficult to know when to leave one out to ARO, but in this case it paid off, even against a Black Friar.
  • Lunokhods really need to be advanced aggressively to be useful.
  • EVOs are… good… not great. In this mission the +3 WIP is very helpful, but they’re big, hard to hide, slower than most remotes… You really need to take advantage of their perks.
  • Chain rifles are a great tool against TO, as we knew already. Coordinated order chain rifles are better!
  • I had better positioning this game and attacked from all sides, picking apart his forces carefully and stacking mods. I felt in control of the game and dictated tempo.
  • I think a lot of this was due to the lack of high buildings in the deployment zones, forcing lots of mid-to-short range engagements where the template weapons and tools I had available were more effective than his tools.
  • I like the short board,
  • Landing a lucky ADHL shot on Konstantinos was quite good. I think he would’ve done a lot of damage otherwise.
  • Krakot had the LoF blocking terrain necessary to get upfield very quickly and safely, without Morlock smoke support. I think I need to start placing him with a path in mind as opposed to thinking only ahead one impetuous order. I need to think several orders ahead.

WiseKensai

I primarily play Infinity and Heavy Gear nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.
