Guest Batrep – Forward (Deployment) March

Here’s another battle report from friend of the blog, /u/GorkkTheOrc! –WiseKensai

With the Escalation league I was in over, it was time to try out ITS season 10! I managed to get in a game of Acquisition with my buddy Gus on Sunday. We both hadn’t played in over a week and we both brought very strange lists compared to what we usually run. I will say that with Acquisition having a 16 inch deployment zone, and Ariadna having a pile of Medium infantry/CAMO the middle of the table is where most the action happened. I won the roll off and chose first turn, Gus took deployment and we were off.

Overview

  • Mission: Acquisition
  • Forces: ALEPH versus USAriadna Ranger Force (300)
  • Deploy First: ALEPH
  • First Turn: ALEPH

Deployment

On the left was my HVT at the 20 inch mark, a Rudras Gunbot (being proxied by an S4 marker) and Nesaie Alke. The Xenotech was on the other side of the billboard Alke was standing behind. In the left corner (out of frame) was my Danavas hacker prone next to the building in that corner. Prone Warcor on the build top, with a netrod on the ground below behind some boxes. In the middle-back was 1 of my Zayin TR bots with a Yudbot behind him, and a Lamedh and Netrod on the ground in front of them. To the left of the Yudbot on the ground behind the billboard was my Proxy Mk.1 Eng (who was also the Datatracker for the mission). The Proxy Mk.4 with HRL was on the building on the right with the 2nd TR bot and Yudbot nearby to pick him up. Lamedh to their right on the ground below. The 2x Grey Antenna’s on the board had my CAMO’d Naga next to each one, the hacker on the left and the FO on the right. My Proxy Mk. 5 was actually on the other side of the building in the middle-right since he had FD lvl 2 thanks to Season 10 (love it!). This put him right next to Gus’ HVT which was great since I needed to FO for my classified. Also my Proxy’s were my reserve unit, but I didn’t want to confuse their placement while I described deployment. On the Left was a Maverick and a Traktor Mul with his HVT up from them on the table edge next to the building. In the middle was another Maverick, a Desperado, and both Camo’d Foxtrots. In the middle heading toward the right was the other Desperado and other Traktor Mul with the Dozer right behind it. Rosie lay prone on the center rooftop with 1 of the Marauders on the ground floor tied to the Xenotech. The other Marauder lay prone on the right center building. The Big 5-man Grunt link team was on the back right corner building with both snipers standing up and everyone else prone. Basically his entire list, save the link team, was covering the entire middle of the table from left to right. It was quite a sight to behold and figure out how I was going to push through it all.

With deployment done we were ready to rumble!

Turn 1

Top of 1 – ALEPH

Gus docked my main order pool 2 orders, which honestly after playing so much limited insertion style lists, I totally forgot that was a thing. Yay back to standard multiple combat groups again! I started my turn realizing that I had both TR bots, the Rudra, and my Proxy Mk. 4, all completely able to see his 5 man sniper team, which also meant they could see me. The main downside for me is that he was waaay back in the DZ which meant I was probably out of my good range band. I used an order from group to on my Danavas to throw marksman up on my center TR bot. Then I attempted to shoot the fireteam and was not surprised I was at about 34 inches. Luckily Marksman had my Zayin rolling on 8’s instead of 5’s, but I was up against 14’s from 2 different snipers. As to be expected I got knocked to unconscious but I had a plan.

I threw an order into my Proxy Mk.1 to move up the board and get my Yudbot to fix my TR bot successfully. I put another order into the TR to have it Climbing+ down the building and up just a little bit to get me into a better range band. Although I wasn’t going to be in cover, it was now my 14’s against his 17’s, a much better spread. Sadly I rolled terribly and my TR bot exploded for its effort. Not having smoke suddenly made this fireteam very troublesome and I wasn’t sure how to fully deal with them. Nevertheless I pressed on and I had my Danavas throw Marksman onto my Rudras. I knew I was in a bad range band but I just wanted to get the heck out of there and slide back while shooting at the sniper team. I ignored 1 sniper and threw my burst 3 at the other, surprisingly I hit the sniper but he passed ARM, I took a couple hits in return but also made 1 ARM and was happy to be alive.

I then turn my attention to the other side of the board where my Proxy Mk. 5 was. I need to FO the HVT for my classified, but he was staring at a Traktor Mul and a Maverick. I decided to walk as close as I could to both of them to make sure I would be in my good range band. Another Maverick spotted me and shot out smoke, while I split burst and FtF’d the two units in front of me. I beat them both out and knocked them both down. With smoke now covering my Mk. 5, I was able to get my Classified off with no retaliation.

I was just about out of orders, and didn’t know what I was going to do with that Sniper team, so I used a couple coordinates to reposition my Rudra a bit and move a couple units into better firing lane areas before throwing several people into suppressive fire. Including using Nesaie’s Lt order since I can’t coordinate her b/c of the Xenotech. I also use my Danavas once more to throw up marksman on the remaining TR bot, to help it out as best I can. With that I passed turn.

Bottom of 1 – USARF

Impetuous Biker Phase! Gus elected not to move his Maverick since my Proxy was staring it down, but the Desperado’s came out swinging. The first desperado went flying toward my Mk.5 and tried to shoot smoke to block out the Rudra that was watching that firelane. The Rudra beat him out and blew up the crazed biker. The 2nd Desperado had much better success and got its smoke off, and continued over to my Proxy, but first it knocked out my Netrod that landed near him. Next thing I know there’s a desperado vs Proxy Gun battle going on and I fail the FtF. My proxy goes down but the desperado gets killed by the remaining TR bot hanging out on its building.

Speaking of the TR bot, time for Gus’ 5 man Grunt team to sniper things away! He activates his link with his sniper who can see my TR bot and my Lamedh FO. My best option is to shoot back and hope for good rolls. He splits burst to cover his bases and needs 14’s to my Lamedh’s 7 and TR bots 8’s. This is when things start to get crazy. Both my Lamedh and TR bot crit back in the FtF and the sniper goes down. Obviously a fluke, so Gus reforms the link and tries again with the second sniper, this time only spotting the TR bot. ANOTHER CRIT FROM THE ZAYIN TR BOT! At this point, I’m the one who’s feeling bad b/c the situation favored Gus in more ways than one. He makes the most of it and moves on to start killing other units.

Suddenly an Airborne ranger drops on the edge of the table and quickly dispatches my Danavas, then enters suppresive fire, just waiting for me to move my Nesaie Lt/Xenotech team. With smoke in the middle of the table and my Proxy Mk. 5 dead, Gus moves his Dozer across the whole board to bring his Traktor Mul back up. He then moves up one of his CAMO’s Foxtrots and makes an intuitive attack to drop a mine right next to my CAMO’s Naga. I just sit there since I don’t want to blow up, and my Lamedh fails at its FP on the Foxtrot (not that it would have stopped the mine).

Using Cautious Movement (honestly I’ve never seen anyone actually use it effectively) he gets his Marauder into a better position and moves up the Xenotech as well to drop its Multi-scanner. Not before leaving a CAMO’d Mine from where he left though, so if my other Naga moves in, I’ll get blown up again. (Gus is amazing with his mine placement and it’s always tricky trying to deal with them). After all of that he was out of orders and passed turn.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – ALEPH

I quickly realize I have to deal with the AD troop that showed up and is blocking my Lt. and Xenotech, it was time for an AD of my own. In enters the Garuda just up the board from the Ranger who was angled just enough for me to come in w/o getting shot up by him. He made a change facing and spun around on me. I threw another order into the Garuda and got rid of the ranger. I only had 1 more regular order in that pool, but I didn’t want to get shot by the Trakor Mul, so I had my Warcor finally move and stand up from above and I’m pretty sure I CRIT my FP on it. Then my Garuda came in and knocked down the defenseless Traktor Mul. Gus joked about running his Dozer all the way back to bring up this Mul since his Traktor’s just don’t ever die.

Then my turn got silly. I moved my Proxy Mk.1 Eng up to my Rudra to bring it back to full Str. However I rolled a 19 for my Wip, calmly used a command token for a re-roll and got a 16. I was now committed, so I used my last command token for a 2nd reroll and got another 19 and knocked my Rudra to Unconsciousness. Needless to say Gus is laughing at my dismay and rightly so because it was just so unexpected. I spend another order to attempt to fix my Rudra and succeed this time! I don’t want to push my luck and I’m starting to run low on orders and I need to get my Xenotech out. I spend Nesaie’s Lt Order and a couple orders to get my Xenotech up, drop it’s multiscanner, finish off the Traktor Mul and move Nesaie prone behind some cover.

Then I spend my remaining orders on my TR and Proxy Mk.4 and the TR stands in the proxy’s former location while the Proxy makes his way down the stairs of the building in order to help my trapped CAMO token. I’m basically out of orders but my TR bot is watching most the board so I pass turn.

Bottom of 2 – USARF

Gus always has some tricks up his sleeve and start with his Prone Marauder who crawls a bit and drops a CAMO token mind on the staircase, just in case anything comes around the corner. He then stands up and tries to take out my prone Nesaie. My Warcor is throwing rocks and Crit FP’s him while he gets 2 hit on my Lt. I make both ARM saves and clear the sweat since being
in LoL my third turn would have been horrible.

Gus starts moving around the former 5 man Grunt team to get his guys into better ranges. He can’t stand up since my TR bot is watching, so there’s a lot of crawling going on but my Warcor is able to see most of what’s happening and just keeps FP-ing Grunts left and right. He’s trying to hit her, but she’s getting really lucky rolls.

Gus also moved his Traktor Mul out to cover the entire Antenna area incase anything gets close to it. With that Gus was out of orders and it was back to me.

Turn 3

Top of 3 – ALEPH

Time for some last turn shenanigans! My Nesaie (now frenzied/impetuous) moves up taking a couple ARO’s, but I only care about the Marauder in front of her, but I fail my FtF and fall unconscious for my effort. Luckily it’s for my Gardua to basically fly up the board, setting off 2 mines and throwing a boarding shotgun at the Marauder. This time I pull it off but my Garuda obviously fall unconscious from the mines.

I then have my Proxy Mk.4 move down the stairs so he can see remaining Maverick and exposed Foxtrot. I split burst and mange to burn them both down in fire, but the mine is still there. I attempt a “discover-shoot” but no luck. Time for a Lamedh suicide run! My FP bot Zooms up, attempts to FP the Traktor and set off the mine all at the same time. Traktor passes BTS and the mine takes out my bot. (Slight progress). My CAMO’d Naga on the left decides to make its move, so it scoots up a bit to see the remaining Marader and goes for the surprise shot-camo-cover Ftf roll. Things work out great and its clear sailing to the objective. I move up, and flip the switch while standing on it. I attempt the same thing on the right side, but my Naga fails to take out the Traktor Mul and I end up on the objective, but not flipped. I sent another Lamedh to FP the Traktor, but Gus passes BTS and it becomes a standoff.

I spend my remaining orders getting my Proxy Mk. 1 data tracker touching the middle objective and getting my Rudra over to touch the left objective with my Naga, I just need something alive holding these antennas. With that I’m out of orders, feeling confident and pass to Gus.

End of ALEPH Turn 3 Pictures of ALEPH and Ariadna Deployment Zones:

Bottom of 3 – USARF

Gus only has about 3 or 4 orders left, so he starts trying to get rid of my units to lower my chance of scoring points. His Traktor tried to blow away my Naga on the right, but gets a FP from my Lamedh that Crits this time while my Naga wins its FtF. On the Left side a grunt runs out to make a long range shot with its shotgun against both the Rudra and Naga. Sadly it doesn’t make a clutch play and gets blown away in response.

But then, there was the lone CAMO’d Foxtrot that I had totally forgotten about. The most clutch play Gus made the whole game. He spent his last orders moving up and around cover to have the Foxtrot run and touch the center objective! I had 4 ARO’s in response, he elected to dodge and rolls 12! He beats out all 4 ARO’s including the TR bot that’s overlooking the middle. I was stunned and shocked at how awesome a play it was. That Foxtrot just kept me from getting 5 points making our game a:

4-1 ALEPH Victory!

The Foxtrot that stole the show:

Notes for Me

  • I should have placed my Proxy Mk.4 on one of the left buildings. Doubling up with my TR bot didn’t make sense and it actually hurt me when trying to deal with that Sniper Team
  • USAriadna always surprises me with just how many orders they have and how versatile their units are. Just when you think you’ve got them all, another one shows up!
  • I got SUPER lucky with those Crits against that sniper team. I’m curious how the battle would have gone if I hadn’t gotten those in.
  • Remember to look at the whole table to make sure there’s not CAMO’d units lying in wait to strike, or deny 5 points. Still an awesome play, lol I just should have seen it coming.
  • Don’t leave things out in the open that don’t need to be. I dunno why that Rudra was peaking out since it doesn’t have Total reaction. I think I was just excited to use it for its first game

Notes for Gus

  • AMAZING last play of the game. It if was a tournament that would have denied me a major victory
  • First time I’ve seen you use so many bikers and that S4 base is tricky to get a feel for/deploy without getting ARO’d everywhere.
  • Honestly, that Sniper team was placed amazingly and you just don’t know when the Crits will start rolling. But you played that 5 man link really well.
  • Holy crap ITS 10 makes your faction scary. You basically had only the link in your DZ and everything else was in the middle of the table. If you had first turn, I’m sure you would cause some serious damage.
  • Always a pleasure playing with you. I like that we both discuss options for “what would be the best play here” makes the game more interactive and helps us both learn.

I primarily play Infinity and Heavy Gear nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.
