Avatar Supreme

After all that high octane tournament play, I wanted to have a more straightforward game as I was testing a new table that I put together in preparation for Rose City Raid 5. Shane (wzzzzrd) graciously agreed to help me test the table with his Morats. I really like the table–it has a lot of destructible terrain. Most of the concrete walls have breakaway sections that can be D-Charged open. Also, the red fuel tanks have a special rule–if you take a crit while using one in cover, replace the crit ARM roll with a single light rocket launcher template, meaning any friends nearby also get hit!

Overview

  • Mission: ITS14 Supremacy
  • Forces: Combined Army versus Morat Aggression Force (300)

  • First Turn: Combined Army

I’ve been watching Erik (Zelaponeepus) have a great time wrecking face with the Avatar, and I was getting some bad FOMO. Hence this list:

I decided to add a little spice in the from of a Unidron Plasma Sniper–the rest is pretty bog standard stuff. Shane is also running a TAG–he’s got a Raicho. The rest of his list is the usual Kornak/Gaki powered links.

Deployment

I’m playing two games at once. Shane chooses deployment so I go first? I guess? Most of the list sort of deploys itself. Taigha watch for Rasyats, Dr. Rocket hangs out somewhere convenient:

I decided to just use the Cateran’s staircase and glue a Rocket Raccoon Heroclix to it. It’s still mostly CB model–certainly by weight! The S-Drones are 3D prints courtesy of Nik (Knyx). I put the Krakot all the way on the left, and the Ikadron and Dartok kinda in the middle to be able to respond to threats as necessary. The M-Drone went on the right to help guard against Rasyats. I think I held the Unidron sniper and the Avatar in reserve.

Shane set up the Gaki along the one of the concrete walls, and then littered the airfield with Morats. The links were mostly clustered towards the center.

I put the Avatar down in a position where it can start blapping things almost immediately and set up the Unidron sniper to cover most of the board. Shane puts down the Morat equivalent by placing a Yaogat and Raicho–with the Raicho chilling in the open.

Turn 1

Top of 1 – Combined Army

Shane takes two orders from the Avatar, as you should. My objective: friendzone as much stuff as I can with the Avatar, or just delete it, whichever is easier. The Krakot starts off by rolling forward with its impetuous order, and then it’s time for the Avatar. I start by engaging the Kurgat.

It takes a bit, but eventually the Kurgat goes down.

I keep shifting and shoot through the window in the wall to challenge the Raicho in the open. I’ve got a significant advantage as I’m looking for 18’s and the Raicho is looking for 8’s. I don’t ace the Raicho in one go…

but it eventually goes unconscious. With the Kurgat gone, I can stop shooting it.

I need to get rid of the Dartok before I can advance the Avatar any further, so I send in the Speculo to take it out. Kornak flamethrowers, which is a bit annoying, but that’s what happens when everyone delays. I really need that Dartok down and then I’ll be good.

I’m pretty low on orders, so I scurry the Avatar to safety and shift the M-Drone forward. The Taigha haven’t moved at all–Rasyats are still a thing.

Bottom of 1 – MAF

Unfortunately for me, I missed the Rindak near the cockpit of the VTOL, and it pops around the corner to bring the Dartok back. Thankfully it fails PH and I don’t have to deal with it.

The Daturazi sets up smoke for the Yaogat, and down goes my Unidron sniper thanks to the Yaogat.

This took quite a few orders, thankfully. I’m hoping Shane forgot about the Krakot, but he didn’t. The E-Drone wrecks it, and then turn goes back to me.

Turn 2

We’re currently tied in quadrants, but the E-drone also flipped a console so Shane is leading 1-2 right now.

Top of 2 – Combined Army

Well, it’s back to the same plan. Ideally I’ll get some consoles flipped, but just pushing on Shane and keeping him out of retreat is the plan. I get the Avatar into place and attempt to friend zone some Morats. Sadly they all dodge.

I decide to just start blasting–really I just want to get rid of the Yaogat since that’s the most threatening to the Avatar at the moment, but i also see the E-Drone. I manage to force dodges on a bunch of stuff and down the E-Drone but that’s it so far.

I get keep trying to get Shane to commit to not dodging so I can land a Sepsitor…

but I’m forced to just HMG ineffectually.

I try to drop Kornak, but it doesn’t work either.

After snagging the near two consoles, with Dr. Worm and the M-Drone, I long-skill Jump the Avatar onto the helipad and get it flash pulsed by the Ikadron. No problem, it’s my last order.

Bottom of 2 – MAF

Well, I haven’t done nearly enough damage, so it’s back to Shane with a pretty healthy order pool in Group 1. He moves the Daturazi to Group 1 and gets on with it. The Daturazi gets close to the Avatar and dodges forward past my sepsitor.

He finally dodges into close combat, dodging past the Sepsitor again and Dr. Rocket’s cover fire.

Nevertheless, the Avatar is still very good at smashing things and it smashes the Daturazi in close combat. Shane thought he didn’t need to Berserk, I’m not sure how I feel about it, but the dice went my way and I can say I feel good about that!

With the Daturazi down, Shane tries to sneak the Rindak by the Avatar, who Sepsitors unsuccessfully against the Rindak’s dodge. However, Dr. Rocket crits the Rindak and does two wounds!

Kornak tries to fight the Avatar and dies to an EXP round.

With that, it’s back to me.

Turn 3

I’ve got more quadrants this time, and two consoles, so it’s currently a 5-2 lead for me.

Top of 3 – Combined Army

Well, the Avatar has the high ground and starts blasting. The Ikadron is the first to go.

Then I need to get some classifieds done. It takes the Dartok FIVE orders to pass a WIP check attempting to Data Scan the Daturazi.

The M-Drone gets the last console, and it’s over to Shane.

Bottom of 3 – MAF

Shane’s in retreat, but Morats, so… the Oznat tries to down the M-Drone but I win the firefight, killing the Oznat.

Then the Yaogat crits the Avatar, which is the only way to take it out, really, but I pass ARM, and that’s game!

9-2, 230-63 Combined Army Victory!

Post Game Analysis

The table is a bit odd. I think it’s too dense still and I need to tweak it a little. I was being a little silly trying to friendzone everyone with the Sepsitor, so I probably could have been a little less aggressive with the Avatar for that reason, but it was fun.

I guess the big things are that it was pretty easy to just get the Avatar pushed forward, so that’s something I need to work on with the table layout, but leaving the Raicho out of cover was a huge mistake. Honestly I think Shane made some good choices overall, but maybe was overly cautious in some places and too aggressive in others, basically at the wrong time. For example, he threw a lot of smoke, perhaps unnecessarily, which was over cautious. But then he just ran the Rindak out in the open and hoped to just dodge his way to victory. Not a bad plan, but that’s the time to throw smoke, not when you’re on burst 4 versus burst 1. I’m not sure what else to say about this game, other than I was careful with the Avatar on the first turn by retreating it more or less back to its starting position, which was really important. Thanks to Shane for being patient with me while I played a simultaneous game and to you for reading!

WiseKensai

I primarily play Infinity and Heavy Gear nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.
