Adepticon 2018 Team Tournament

I arrived at the Infinity hall shortly before the 200 point Infinity Team Tournament was supposed to start and asked if there were any other orphans looking for a teammate. Angelina pointed me to none other than Robert Paul, who had just won the Baltimore Brawl 2018, Rumble 2018, and the 300-point ITS tournament at Adepticon the day before. Well then. Can’t really ask for a better teammate!

We dashed to the registration desk, forked over $20 each, got our ticket, and talked through our gameplan for the three missions. Neither of us had planned on playing in the Team Tournament, and we had both made our lists over breakfast with the models we had brought for the other tournaments–in his case the Escalation and 300-point tournments and Biotechvore in mine. This meant I didn’t really have much in the way of model selection: Mobile Brigada, Jaguars, a Moran, a Bandit, and McMurrough, but I made it work. We named ourselves Haqqidor since Corregislam sounded weird.

I’ve done my best to remember everything, but there was a lot of beer and not a lot of sleep at Adepticon, so I certainly could have made some mistakes in capturing the battle reports here. Please forgive any errors in the lists or my reporting! I got pretty distracted with the challenge of the game and didn’t take as many pictures as usual. I hope you enjoy nonetheless!

Game 1 – Haqqidor versus Team No Collusion

Our first game was against Adam and Obadiah, who were playing USARF and Kazaks. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions as to who their HVTs were. Both of them are excellent painters and won best theme!

Deployment

We got to play on the train table! It is SUPER cool. It is also a little awkward to play on, as the train and buildings really get in the way of moving models around on ground level. It did give us a lot of verticality and very interesting lines of fire to deal with, so that was really fun.Robert and I had to deploy first, and we agreed to hold his Fiday in reserve. I put my Mobile Brigada “Haris” watching our AC2, with the Jaguars and Massacre ready to run up the board, basically along the axis of the train. My Moran covered the left panoply and Robert’s Al’Hawwa the right panoply. Robert scattered Naffatun around our AC2, with one watching the rear of the table, and put a Nasmat next to my Lieutenant with the Ghulam Doctor nearby. A Daylami panzerfaust backed up my Jaguars, and Robert’s Hafza HRL pretended to be Leila and watched the doors of the train on our left from ground level.Adam put his Marauder core in the buildings on his left, prone or otherwise in total cover. His two non-infiltrating Grunts overwatched the AC2 along with most of Obadiah’s Line Kazaks. The Dog Warrior threatened our right flank, with one Spetznaz in the center and the other 0n their end of the train, hanging out with an Irmandinho who rolled X-Visor. Adam attempted to land two Grunt infiltrators and stuck the last one, covering my Jaguars and my Mobile Brigada LT. We then placed our Fiday as close to the AC2 as possible, and Adam and Obadiah infiltrated a Scout on our right flank.  After nominating DataTrackers (ours was the Jag CR, and I don’t remember theirs). With that, we were off!

Turn 1

Top of Turn 1 – Haqqidor

First off, we needed to remove the Grunt Infiltrator. We tried with the Daylami, but lost the face to face roll and lost the Daylami. Robert throws smoke onto the AC2 and gets his Fiday into base to base and takes a whack, putting a wound on. I remove the Grunt Infiltrator with my Mobile Brigada LT’s MULTI Rifle, but he gets flamethrowered and goes unconscious. Not great! Not to worry though, Robert picks my LT back up with his doctor and I reform the link. I then spend the rest of my orders running Massacre and the Jaguars up the board, throwing some eclipse smoke to be able to get the entire Haris into close combat. With my last two orders I’m able to smash the AC2 into scrap and get the Haris into a better position–4 dice on a CC21 model with a PH19 DA CCW was thankfully enough.
Sadly, I lose the Jaguar panzerfaust from the Haris to a Line Kazak after misjudging movement. Oh well. AC2’s down, that’s what counts. Robert re-impersonates the Fiday and throws a bunch of stuff into suppression, then we pass the turn.

Bottom of Turn 1 – Team No Collusion

Well, the expected happens. After the Dog Warrior moves up out of LoF, the Spetznaz appear and start gunning down things. We lose a Naffatun over a few orders, and I lose one of the Jaguars to the Marauder link, but Massacre covers himself and the Fiday with smoke–we cleverly put the Fiday in the middle of my haris to make it tough for them to flamethrower our guys. Adam is hopping from foot to foot at this point and asking Obi to “let me do the thing!” Obi finally relents and Van Zant comes a knocking. Right at the base of this green building. After gunning down Robert’s Naffatun Lieutenant and getting crit by my Mobile Brigada BSG, Van Zant drops my Mobile Brigada BSG… In his dogged state, Van Zant still has the presence of mind to find the nearby elevator… And rides it up to visit my Mobile Brigada ML!She take a pistol shot at him as he comes around the corner, but he buries his axe into her chest, cutting through the armor. Thankfully, it’s wedged in there pretty tight so on his next order my Mobile Brigada manages to pull her knife and crit-stabs him in the face.
Success! Adam’s basically out of orders now, so Obi finishes off my Mobile Brigada ML with one of his Spetznaz HMGs  and then runs his Irmandinho up the length of the train, throwing smoke as he goes.

Turn 2

Top of Turn 2 – Haqqidor

Robert’s in loss of lieutenant, so he settles for getting his Nasmat close to my Mobile Brigada BSG and having Tarik trade shots with Adam’s Grunts and Marauders while trying to get up the board on the left. I’m down to Massacre, my Lieutenant, a Jaguar Panzerfaust, and my Moran, so I use all those orders to get the Moran into a better position to hopefully catch a Spetznaz with some Crazy Koalas. I even drop them off for good measure! We try to get some stuff out of the panoplies but fail. We at least manage to get our classified though.

Bottom of Turn 2 – Team No Collusion

Adam spends a bunch of orders playing peek-a-boo with Tarik, forcing him back into cover. Obadiah sacrifices something to the Crazy Koalas to get his Spetznaz out of the trap and continues to blast things off the table. Leila, who is really a Hafza HRL, goes down to the Spetznaz in the train, and I lose my last Jaguar to a Molotok Maverick. The Moran dies to Adam’s Grunt that failed infiltration, and then they pass the turn after killing the Al’Hawwa & Massacre and repositioning the Dog Warrior and Irmandinho.

Turn 3

Top of Turn 3 – Haqqidor

Robert goes lieutenant hunting and throws his Fiday at one of Adam’s Grunts who was doing a good job at bluffing at being the lieutenant. He declares that it will take him three orders, and he’s spot on. Sadly, not only is the grunt not the Lieutenant, after getting the Fiday into position the Grunt pistol-crits the Fiday. I try to take out the Marauder Molotok to reduce the link bonus with my Mobile Brigada Lieutenant, but it doesn’t work out. He’s my only model left on the table so I’ve just got his order and his lieutenant order, and I’m outside of 16. It was a long shot, anyway. Tarik goes into action, jumping around trying to get after Adam’s lieutenant, but Adam’s HRL Marauder puts an end to that. Robert had nominated the Ghulam doctor as his Lieutenant, so he spends that order on picking up my Mobile Brigada BSG.

Bottom of Turn 3 – Team No Collusion

The Irmandinho tries to land some smoke for the Dog Warrior but fails his roll and my Mobile Brigada torches him. Adam spends his order pool to gun down basically everything that’s on the board with exception of the Ghulam Doctor and the Fanous remote, and then the Dog Warrior springs into action. After grabbing D-Charges out of the panoply, he runs across the board and gets in three CC attacks on the AC2. Thanks to the -3 due to D-Charges he fails his first CC roll, and we make 4/6 of the subsequent ARM saves! Really came down to the wire! We only had 24 points left on the table and they had something like 298.

7-3 Haqqidor Victory!

Notes

  • I will be taking a Jaguar Haris or similar the next time I have to do Looting and Sabotage. DA CCW with high CC and multiple engaged models is awesome!
  • The Fiday was a great tool for this mission too. I’ll have to remember that.
  • I forgot about Adam’s infiltrating grunts, but we managed just fine.
  • I can see why Robert won the last three major tournaments he played in. Keeps cool under pressure, excellent command of the tools in his arsenal, and a good sense of what to prioritize.

Game 2 – Bandit with a Shotgun

We played Josh and Greg in this game, who were playing Steel Phalanx and French, respectively. After nerding out over meeting another FRRM player, we shook hands and got down to gaming!

Deployment

This table was beautiful but man was it rough to play on. We lost the rolloff and Josh & Greg decided to go first. Robert and I discussed what the best options were for side, and we ended up choosing the side with the Kum Garage on it. Our reasoning was that it would be easier to control, and we didn’t want them to pile a bunch of camo tokens into the building that would be impossible to dig out. After dropping in some netrods, they started putting models down. Josh put Phoenix and Machaon on our left flank with some Myrmidon backup. Thrasymedes and this Thorakites buddies hung out in overwatch on top of the catwalk in their deployment zone. Greg put his Loup Garou link team on our right flank with the sniper watching down the main firelane, and then proceeded to place a whopping 6 camo tokens across the board. Ugh. Damned Chasseur minelayers. Robert didn’t have a ton of experience against FRRM so I filled him in on their statline and abilities. I missed the fact that Greg had put an obvious Zouave lieutenant in the two story pillbox on our right, but I was too busy being intimidated by all the camo tokens!

We were pretty constrained by the board and by the placement of all the rocket launchers on the Steel Phalanx side, so we did our best to make do. I deployed my Mobile Brigada core on the right, covering the final approach to the right side of our deployment zone. Robert backed them up with his Ghulam doctor and a Nasmat. He put a pair of Naffatun on the right, one on catwalk just at the edge of our deployment zone and the other on the ground, closer to the middle of our deployment zone. His Hafza Lt hide in the Comanche pillbox in the middle along with Massacre. I put my two Jaguars in middle–the Panzerfaust Jag was left out to ARO things and the other one was hiding in the back of the Comanche pillbox. I put my Bandit on the right in one of the two story Comanche pillboxes, opposite Greg’s Zouave. Robert’s Asawira Spitfire hides underneath his Naffatun on the right.

I left my extra chain rifle Jaguar on the left to help out with smoke for Robert’s Mutt, who was over there with another one of the Ghulam’s Nasmats and the Daylami Panzerfaust. One Fiday hung out in the Kum Garage, and then it was time for reserves.

Josh and Greg had both held something in reserve. While technically illegal, one of them was a netrod so this wasn’t a big deal for anyone. The other was yet another Chasseur Minelayer. Ugh. We put our other Fiday just outside their deployment zone, hanging out near the Loup Garou in a building. With that, it was time to get burned off the board by Phoenix!

Turn 1

Top of Turn 1 – French Steel

Between Phoenix and Thrasymedes, we lose our Barid, the Jaguar chain rifle on the left, the Jaguar Panzerfaust, and the Daylami. We almost lose the Mutt too, were it not for some excellent smoke rolls from Robert. Phoenix ends pushed deep down our left flank, threatening the core of our deployment zone. Not good! Greg’s FRRM activate, discover the nearest Fiday and shotgun him down before settling into position covering our approach on the right. One of his Chasseuers tries to take out Massacre, but I make my smoke roll, protecting both Massacre and Robert’s Lt. LoF blocked now, the offending Chasseur goes into suppression watching our deployment zone while his fellow Chasseur pushes deep into our near left quadrant, dropping a mine as he does so.

Bottom of Turn 1 – Haqqidor

We cancel the Mutt’s order to prevent him from getting blown off the table by all the rocket launchers looking at him. I use my Brigada HMG to gun down one of the viral rifle Loup Garou and push the other two Brigada into the near right quadrant. Robert uses one of his Naffatun to take out the Chasseur in suppression, letting me get Massacre into position to cover the Mutt with eclipse smoke.

The Mutt runs towards Phoenix and isolates the other nearby Chasseur in the near left quadrant as he does so. Jammers OP! We have to deal with the mine that’s covering us so Robert sacrifices his Naffatun to the mine, losing it in the process. At least we unstuck Massacre! Robert makes some threatening moves with his remaining Fiday in the Kum Garage, but we fail to do any real damage. I’ve only got one order left so I shove Massacre into a scoring zone, butt flapping in the breeze. Robert and I reluctantly pass the turn.

Turn 2

We’re tied on zones, with the datatracker bonus, so it’s 2-2 for now!

Top of Turn 2 – French Steel

Phoenix takes out the Mutt and now is in our near left zone. The Loup Garou advance some more, and Thraysmedes tries to take out Massacre but is stopped by eclipse smoke. This in turn allows the nearby Chasseur to drop a mine covering Massacre, which is supremely annoying! Josh spends the rest of his orders pushing Thrasymedes and Thorakites crew into scoring zones, which takes awhile since he has to climb down off the catwalk through difficult terrain. The Loup Garou are pretty far up now, watching our approach on the right, and a pair of Chasseurs manage to take out our remaining Fiday inside the Kum Garage.

Bottom of Turn 2 – Haqqidor

Ugh. We are basically on the back foot now and have lost control of the board. I attempt to unstick Massacre by discovering the mine with my Boarding Shotgun Brigada, but fail. This does, however, let me get the Brigada HMG into a position to gun down Thrasymedes and the FO Thorakites. I’ve now got a HMG watching the center of the table, which should be worth something, right? I pull Massacre back and dodge the mine, but that Chasseur is still there. Robert sends in the Asawira, which thankfully both Josh and Greg had forgot about. The Asawira drops the other viral rifle Loup Garou, breaking the link, but doesn’t manage to take anything else out in the next few orders. Dice will be dice! I try to take out Phoenix with Massacre, but he beats me with smoke.

Turn 3

They’ve got more quadrants than we do at this point, so it’s now 5-3, since our data tracker is still up.

Top of Turn 3 – French Steel

Greg pushes his Loup Garou even farther forward, locking down the Kum Garage with two Chasseurs and the remnants of the link team, which he reforms. I didn’t actually kill Thrasymedes so Josh runs Machaon back across the table after blasting Massacre and my BSG Brigada off the table with Phoenix, throwing smoke on the way to pick up the Thorakites and Thrasymedes.  He left Phoenix where he was, so at this point they’re controlling 3/4 of the quadrants.

Bottom of Turn 3 – Haqqidor

Robert proves why he’s won three tournaments by just rushing the Asawira into 4 boarding shotgun shots, 2 mine templates, 2 pistol shots, and 2 flamethrower templates and dodges them all. He manages to kill a Loup Garou before going down, but we’re basically out of good options at this point…

I’ve said it many times–I fail my Bandit, my Bandit doesn’t fail me. I stand her up and take a max-range shotgun shot across the board, catching all of the Josh’s remaining Thorakites in the far right quadrant under the template. True to form, she blasts them all off the table, clearing the quadrant entirely! We can’t believe our luck, but I am out of orders. Robert’s got a few left so he tries to get the Nasmat across the centerline… but we don’t have enough movement. I don’t believe any of us could classifieds done, so it’s an

8-3 French Steel Victory!

Notes

  • Our deployment was surprisingly open, especially since there was enough cover on their side of the table to advance unopposed to get into a good flanking position.
  • 8 camo tokens in the midfield really sucks.
  • Thrasymedes and his light rocket launcher buddy really locked us into our deployment zone–we didn’t have a lot of options for punching out and both of our serious gunfighters–the Asawira and my Mobile Brigada HMG started on the same side.
  • I perhaps could have attempted to take out the Zouave with my Bandit, or perhaps we could’ve used the Naffatun that was there to do it, but neither of us put much thought into it because Phoenix occupied a fair amount of our attention.
  • Long story short, we were out maneuvered and we missed a few key moments where we could’ve broken out:
    • Lieutenant sniping the Zouave
    • Failing the discover on the mine with my Brigada BSG
    • Having a very weak left flank
  • Greg and I talked shop after the game about FRRM. He was surprised that I didn’t go after his obvious Lt. I told him that it didn’t really occur to me. In turn, I wondered why he didn’t use SSL1 at all, but he didn’t think of it either.

Game 3 – Missiles Away!

Robert and I were pretty drained after our second game, not to mention that this was Robert’s third straight day of Infinity tournament play! We got our pairings and shopped around for a suitable table. One of our opponents offered to play on the table he had brought, which was mostly home brew scatter and Spartan Scenics buildings. This was fine with us, as it looked pretty sharp and fun to play on with a lot of nice rooftops to deploy on.

They introduced themselves as Team Skynet and told us they were playing Aleph and Onyx. WHAT. That’s not okay, those guys are supposed to be mortal enemies! I’m sorry to say that I’ve forgotten their names, I was pretty exhausted at this point and it didn’t get written to long term memory. Sorry guys! If you read this, get in contact with me and I’ll rectify the situation. Glad to have had the chance to throw down against you, especially against such TAG-heavy lists! My first time facing a Marut and Overdrons, so thanks for giving me the opportunity to see them in action.

Deployment

Team Skynet deployed first and basically split the table in half between them. Onyx showed up on our left with the Unidrons and Overdrons behind a building, with the Nexus lieutenant far in the back left near Bit & Kiss. An Ímetron fell from the sky and hung out just outside their deployment zone all the way on the left. They lost one off the board too. Once Onyx was deployed, a bunch of Netrods rained from the sky on the right and were “protected” by a Yudbot and a baggage bot. A Danavas hacker stuck to cover near the middle of the board, just in view of the Netrods, and their Sophotect hid in the back middle of the board. Their designated target was just outside their deployment zone on the left, just in range to be protected by their Overdrons and Unidrons.

We took a little long in deployment, prompting a “hurry up, please” from Team Skynet.  Our bad, guys! Long day. Basically what happened was that the Overdrons were visible from our deployment zone, so Robert and I spent awhile covering them with nasty AROs. In my case a pair of linked Jaguar Panzerfausts and my linked Brigada ML. The rest of my Brigada hung out on a rooftop in the back of our deployment zone to be super safe. Probably overthought it a bit.

I put Massacre and the chain rifle Jaguar on the right side of the table, and my Moran on the left, covering the approach the Overdrons and Unidrons would have to take. Our own Designated Target was on the right, a few short moves away from Massacre–we intended to sync with her and drag her back towards our deployment zone under cover of eclipse smoke. This way, the Marut will have to walk by the Al’Hawwa AHD sitting between it and our deployment zone.

Robert’s Daylami covered the Overdron I wasn’t covering with my Jaguar Panzerfausts, and Tarik did DataTracker things on the left of the board. We planned to use him to clear out the left side and then take out their HVT. Robert’s Hafza HRL again pretended to be Leila and was prone on a rooftop, with his Naffatun setting up a little castle on the left of our deployment zone to protect his Lieutenant. Robert’s Ghulam doctor hung out near my Brigada, just in case, with her Nasmat on the left of our deployment zone.

Team Skynet plopped their Marut down on a rooftop, staring down my Mobile Brigada ML and all three of our Panzerfausts! That was either going to end really well or really poorly! Robert stuck his Fiday at the base of the building the Marut was on, figuring we’d have to CC it down or otherwise do some Fiday nonsense.

Turn 1

Top of Turn 1 – Team Skynet

First order, the Marut activates and starts blasting away, putting two shots into my Brigada ML, one into the Jaguar Panzerfaust it can see, and the last one into Robert’s Daylami. I lose the Jaguar to shock ammo, the Daylami and the Marut whiff against each other, but I land a hit on the Marut with my Brigada’s ML!

Three failed ARM saves later, the Marut is unconscious on the roof. Huzzah! Skynet’s Aleph player spends the rest of his orders climbing the Yudbot onto the roof and putting a single STR back onto the Marut. With that, it’s the Onyx player’s turn. One of the Overdrons runs out into the open and gets blasted into unconsciousness by the Mobile Brigada ML, but not before taking out my other Panzerfaust Jaguar. Bit and Kiss advance up the field and stop just outside of my Moran’s repeater range, lucky them! One of the Unidrons shuffles around ostensibly to protect their HVT and then they pass the turn after shuffling the Nexus Lieutenant around.

Bottom of Turn 1 – Haqqidor

I spend my first two orders trying to take out the Marut but end up losing my Brigada ML. Oh well. No big deal. As it turns out there’s enough cover between Massacre and our HVT that I can just safely grab her and run all the way back to our deployment zone. I spend the rest of my order pool doing exactly that, dragging her back to our deployment zone and tucking her safely into cover.Robert reveals Leila to be the Hafza HRL that she actually is and drops a template on the only thing he can see, which is the Ímetron. The template covers the Ímetron, a Unidron, and the remaining Overdron. While we hit all three, only the first two fail their saves, so the Overdron remains unscathed. Tarik guns the remaining Overdron down, kills the HVT by throwing all 4 dice at it just in case, then gets himself glued taking out Bit. I’m out of orders so Robert spends the rest of his orders blasting the Danavas off the table and wiping out two of the netrods that are conveniently in a line using the Fiday, who tucks himself into cover just underneath the Marut.

Turn 2

Top of Turn 2 – Team Skynet

They’re down to only a handful of orders each. The Onyx player knocks out the frozen Tarik with his remaining Unidron, but the REM is Isolated by the Al’Hawwa and blown up by Crazy Koalas. The Marut leans out to flamethrower the Fiday, but the Fiday engages successfully, grabbing hold of the Marut’s arm and following it back up onto the roof. Thankfully, this also brings the Marut’s silhouette cylinder into range of the Al’Hawwa, who successfully possesses it. At this point, there’s no much else to be done and they pass the turn after running the Sophotect up to fix the Overdron that my Brigada took out on turn 1.

Bottom of Turn 2 – Haqqidor

There really isn’t much for me to do, as I don’t have any assets on the relevant side of the table and the Marut is ours. Between the Hafza and the Marut, we mop up the rest of Team Skynet’s forces, including the Nexus Lt hiding in the backfield. After picking up Tarik with the nearby Nasmat to increase our live model count, we pass the turn with basically no Onyx on the table and the Marut alone in its order pool. We call it there, and shake on the game. Since Tarik was our datatracker and he killed Team Skynet’s HVT, it’s a

10-0 Haqqidor Victory!

Thanks to Team Skynet for pushing through the unlucky dice and fighting to the very end! Hats off to them for keeping their game faces on and dice rollin’ the whole game!

Notes

  • Having an ML out of good range is sad, but dice luck will beat any rangeband! I think I was forced to put the ML Brigada there to see the Overdron, and our opponents cleverly put the Marut inside of 24″ of the Brigada to retain good range on the MULTI HMG but make it difficult for me.
  • Still questionable to risk the Marut to a ML and two Panzerfausts on every activation though…
  • Our MLs and HRLs did some serious work this game. Once we blew up or otherwise neutralized the TAGs it was pretty tough for Team Skynet.
  • This game was definitely an illustration of the power of going second and choosing deployment, you can really exploit any angles of attack your opponent might have left open–with AP+EXP rounds!

Overall Notes

  • Well, I had a lot of fun!
  • It was instructive to play with Robert Paul, he’s mastered the abstract symbol manipulation metagame of Infinity and is therefore quite good at quickly:
    • estimating order expenditure
    • prioritizing threats
    • assessing odds
    • executing a plan efficiently
  • He was also just a really pleasant human being to hang out with all day!
  • I think one thing that I took away from the game mode in general is that most turns looked like Player 1 from a team would expend all of their orders, then player 2 would expend all their orders. I think this is a mistake. You have another 200 points of problem solving on the table, use it!
  • I think we did the best when Robert and I traded off order expenditure, using the right tool for the job at the time.  We did the poorest at that our second game, which I think has a lot to do with our loss.
  • We came in 6th overall, which I was pretty happy about. My first national Infinity tournament and I did pretty well… well let’s be honest… Robert Paul did really well and I rode his coattails!
  • I think this series of games really underscores the “it’s not your list it’s you” mantra of Infinity. Robert and I had never met, had never discussed our lists prior to making them, and just literally threw together something out of the models we had. I didn’t even have 10 orders! It’s really about how you use the tools you have.
  • Thanks to all our opponents for being awesome and to the staff for organizing everything and making it run smoothly!

I primarily play Infinity (Nomads) these days and I'm getting into Heavy Gear (CEF). I'm toying with some wet navy ships and some spaceships too, and still have a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart for XV8 Crisis Suits.
