Rise of the Zondbot

Adam wasn’t able to play in the last tournament because there was an odd number of players. He had really wanted to try out a new list so he asked if I was available for a game on the Monday after the tournament. I said sure, since I wanted to see how his list performed on the table. It had elements of things that I would try in an Ikari list, so I figured it would be a good way to tune my hypothetical Ikari list without having to put all the models together. Adam and his lovely wife fed me dinner and then we were off to the game store for some nerdy fun.

Deployment

I won the roll off, which meant I was going first. I didn’t remember what was in his list, even after reading his article, so I didn’t want to have to weather a storm of hypothetical Yuan Yuans before having my first turn. I also wanted to try for a turn 1 grab of the objective, if possible. I deployed my Morans and Koalas a bit farther back than I might have usually, just to cover the board edges and potential landing sites. My Puppeteer laid a mine next to my object, and I scattered Morlocks through my deployment zone. The central one rolled my favorite MetaChemistry roll, 8-4 MOV!The Zondnautica went down on the left, mounted, as I wanted the mobility for this particular table. I stuck Zero Cool and his HD+ in the back right and protected a likely approach with my Heckler Jammer on the right as well.My reserve was the Kriza. With that, Adam stuck his Druze/Tanko fireteam on the big structure in his deployment zone, with all the Druze on the ground and the Tanko on the catwalk for ARO duty. He put three Keisotsu down, strung across the table, all prone, to hide his Lt. His right flank was covered by a lone Warcor, and he stuck the Fasid HRL on the left. Both the Tanko and the Fasid had their own Yaozao, slaved to the Doctor. Finally, he stuck two Desperados on the table, one on each flank.I put my Kriza a short move away from the HRL Fasid and Adam put down a Ninja KHD somewhere sneaky, then we were off!

Turn 1

Top of Turn 1 – Nomads

My Morlocks get enough smoke down to protect the Zondnautica and the Krakot such that everyone can advance safely. I spend entirely too much time getting some smoke down near the Keisotsu link team with one of my Morlocks, then finally bring in a Tomcat. I climb the Tomcat up after planting a D-Charge for Sabotage and take some shots at a Desperado, dropping it over the course of two orders. The Kriza drops the Al Fasid HRL unconscious, and it’s back to the Tomcat. I blow the charges as I move towards the link, grabbing my classified, and come around the corner to see the Tokusetsu Doctor, a Yaozao, and the Tanko. The doctor dodges and the link delays. The Tanko can’t see me, so I drop a flamethrower template across everyone, thinking I’d get some efficiency out of it.Sadly, the doctor and the ‘bot dodge and the Tanko lands a missile on the Tomcat, killing it. I should’ve dumped three combi rifle shots into the doctor… Out of orders and disappointed in my choices, I pass the turn after failing a Cybermask on my Lieutenant.

Bottom of Turn 1 – Ikari

Adam sends in the remaining Desperado to take out my Zondnautica. I beat out the 5 assault pistol shots, reposition my 8-4 MOV Morlock with a dodge, and take the Desperado off the table with a final shot from the Kriza. Not so shabby! The Tokusetsu Doctor picks up the Al Fasid, which undoes basically my whole first turn… why didn’t I shoot the combi!? So much regret! Then the link goes to work. I always forget to reposition things in smoke, and then when the smoke goes away I get into trouble. The Tanko shifts quickly and drops the Krakot with a missile…then one of the Druze Panzerfausts kills the Morlock on the right with a combi. My flank is collapsing, which is not great…Now that both chain rifles are down, Adam reveals a Ninja KHD and Redrums Zero Cool through the nearby Moran’s repeater. Thankfully I manage to jam the Ninja with the nearby Heckler.
The link repositions to take some shots at my Kriza with the Druze HMG, putting a wound on it and forcing me back into cover. After throwing his Keisotsu into suppression, Adam passes the turn.

Turn 2

Top of Turn 2 – Nomads

I’m in loss of lieutenant and I have a lot to do. I use a Morlock to block the Tanko’s LoF to the Spitfire Zondnaut, and then drive the Zondmate into chain rifle range of the Warcor. Between it and the Spitfire, the Warcor is toast. Now that the Warcor is down, I have a hole to get the 8-4 Morlock into position to chain rifle two Druze and the Tanko. I lose the Morlock to the mine, and sadly everyone passes dodge or ARM rolls.I had hoped to break the link with the Morlock so I can take out the Druze HMG, but now I’m stuck just making the best of it with the Kriza. The Kriza comes through for me though, and I blast the Druze HMG off the table. I spend another order, using a command token, to put a wound on the Tanko, then retreat the Kriza into cover. I finish off the Tanko with a crit from the Zondmate’s Spitfire at outside 32″! High burst for the win!
I need to get rid off the Ninja, which takes a bit. The Moran tries first and fails, but the Heckler comes through for me, both of them popping out and back to take shots.I spend my last order cautious moving the Hollow Man into a slightly better position and advancing the Daktari’s Zondbot, which will become relevant later.

Bottom of Turn 2 – Ikari

Adam takes out the Zondmate with his Druze, picks up his Tanko with the doctor, and starts pushing towards my objective. The Druze are down to a three man core now, so Adam makes the best of it and trucks the up the board, taking out first the Kriza and then the Hollow Man with Viral Pistol fire. Thankfully, I had nominated my Daktari as the lieutenant, so I didnt’ go into LoL again. With that done, Adam passes the turn back to me.

Turn 3

Top of Turn 3 – Nomads

I manage to get my last Moran into range of the Druze and the chain rifle finally does work, dropping two of them. The Druze open fire, blasting my Morlock off the table, but the damage is done.I gun down the last Druze with my right Moran, but miss the ARO from the Al Fasid, who is watching the Moran and lose him. I move my other Moran off his catwalk and throw him and my puppeteer into suppression watching the objective.

Bottom of Turn 3 – Ikari

Adam informs me that I should know what’s coming, and I do. The Al Fasid is going to get off his lazy bum and slog across the table.I had misjudged the angles–not that I had a huge amount of movement to get the right angles, and the Fasid takes out my Moran from outside of 24″. I broke suppression because I judged the distance, but it wasn’t enough, even with mimetism. The Al Fasid stomps on my Heckler to get Extreme Prejudice and tie up the game, then makes a run for my objective.I crit-dodge on the engage from the Zondbot, which is hilarious, and my Puppeteer kills the Al Fasid with AP rounds while Adam makes unhappy noises. We’re officially tied up now, and Adam is out of orders, so after a good chuckle we shake hands on the

4-4 Tie!

Notes

Notes for Me

  • Adam thought I should’ve attempted the Cybermask on my Interventor earlier so I’d have backup orders to ensure success. This would’ve saved my Interventor from the Ninja, I suppose.
  • Definitely should’ve shot the doctor with my combi and not the flamethrower. That would’ve saved the Tomcat and killed the Doctor. Probably. The Tanko didn’t even have LoF. ARGH! So dumb. And the Fasid was already down.
  • Need to bring Tomcats back into my lists again.
  • Need to be more careful with my Morlock/Krakot positioning. I’m losing Krakots a lot lately, so I think I need to be more careful with them.
  • Zondnautica are consistently useful. The Spitfire is the most flexible, I think, but the other profiles are pretty awesome too.
  • Morlocks are so good. I think I need to start using the assault pistol profile more so I can start contesting face to face rolls. Chain rifles are sometimes not the best tool.

Notes for Adam

  • Good work sniping the Interventor.
  • Not sure what the Desperado were really capable of, they died pretty quick. Would’ve been a different game.
  • I dig the Druze link, they really do have a lot of tools. Those viral pistols are gross.
  • Great game, as always!

I primarily play Infinity these days, but I have PHR fleet for Dropfleet Commander and I will eventually get my CEF for Heavy Gear built...

This was really a fun game, we both made some stupid mistake, but that kept it interesting! Why, oh why, did I shoot at the morlock with all my Druze instead of shooting with one and dodging with the rest?!
