Nuclear November Tournament Report

Adam and I showed up to our monthly ITS tournament with random Combined Army and random Haqq lists, respectively. Since I’m officially a Warcor now, we’re taking turns taking the bye at an odd-number of players tournament. I had prepped two random Nomad lists, but I wanted to see what the random list generator would give me for limited insertion Haqq. I was pretty excited to try out both of these lists, neither of which is what I would take normally, forcing me to try out some weird new things! Since we each took a Bye for one of the rounds, we both got to try out our random lists, which was pretty awesome. The third round Bye went to Andrew (SimpleKnight) who was feeling pretty tired by game 3 (he and his lovely wife are juggling two tiny humans back at home) so he graciously and gladly accepted the additional time to nap.

Game 1 – EVO Phone Home

Game 1 was versus Steven (darkapostle), who lives pretty far away from the LGSes I frequent. He was bringing TAK, and I had no idea what to expect, since this was my first time meeting him! I apologized in advance for playing a random list and the resulting decrease in my play speed, but he was very gracious and understanding. It ended up not mattering, as we were the first table finished with our game by a healthy margin of almost 30 minutes.

Okay, let’s talk about this list. Everything in it is pretty awesome, sans the EVO. There’s basically no synergy here, unless I wanted to do some coordinated hacking with rerolls… of Ariadna. Well, at least it’s worth 45 points because of baggage, right? I also am not the biggest fan of the Asawira BSG. As brutal as that can be, it’s kinda hard to get the up the field by themselves. There’s not much in the way of redundancy either, and I’m really relying on Tarik to get some work done. I’m finding that these random lists often force you into those kinds of situations, where you rely on something that’s not optimal to get the job done. If I lose Tarik then I’m out of burst 4 guns, and although I didn’t know it at the time, most of

Deployment

I took advantage of the Druze’s forward deployment and put him prone on the Comanche sniper tower near the rightmost objective, then backed him up with a Kum Biker (the picture is from after my impetuous move). I figured I might need a backup specialist on the right, so that’s where my Ayyar went.  The Al’Hawwa went right next to the central objective, and then I put the Asawira and Muyib in the middle, kinda unsure about what to do with them.I foolishly left the Muyib out to take shots at stuff with his Panzerfaust (thanks to Erik for letting me borrow a painted Muyib model), not really thinking about he possibility of having a linked Vet Kazak AP HMG on the other side of the table. The EVO went on the left to be a slow, big-bottomed specialist, and to serve as a literal roadblock to get to Tarik, who was behind the armory building. I held my Tuareg in reserve, not sure where her sniper rifle would be best used.Steven set up his Vet Kazak link on the right side of his table, hugging some rocks to get the benefit of the Saturation Zone. His antipode controller hung out all the way in the back right corner, with the ‘podes themselves on the left. A Scout FO faced off against my Druze on the left, and another Scout FO hung out on a roof in the center. I put down my Tuareg to (literally) snipe Voronin on Steven’s right, and he covered the table with Vassily’s T2 sniper in response.

Turn 1

Top of 1 – Haqqislam

The Kum Biker scoots forward and manages to discover the Scout on the right, but nothing else happens. I leave her there, figuring a chain rifle covering the Scout is a good thing. At this point, I don’t have a strong plan, but I know I want to get rid of two orders immediately, so I send in the Tuareg. It takes me something like 4 orders to finally shock Voronin off the table, including a mutual crit on one order. With that complete, I snag the central box with my Al’Hawwa and through some coordinated orders, barely get him to relative safety inside the armory building, retreating the Tuareg and advancing the Ayyar at the same time. Tarik tucks himself into a little pocket on the left that you need to super jump to in order to be safe from maurading Vet Kazaks, and I pass the turn.

Bottom of 1 – TAK

Voronin’s dead, but Vassily takes command. Steven starts things off by punishing my decision to leave the Muyib out, and the Muyib gets blasted off the table by the Vet Kazak’s AP HMG. Not really sure what I expected to happen there, but I gamely attempted to punch the Kazak in the face with a Tank Fist and failed.Next, I lose the Tuareg to the central scout, but at least drop a mine to make things more difficult. The Antipodes advance, and the Kum Biker discovers one on the way, which is great ’cause they’re now chain-rifle-able.Before I can get too excited, Steven forces a Scout for Kum Biker trade, shocking the biker off the table and losing the Scout to a chain rifle.Steven advances the link team, funneling them down the corridor where the Tuareg started and successfully grabbing the left objective with one of his Paramedics before setting up for Turn 2 and passing things back to me.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – Haqqislam

I take out the Scout with Tarik’s Lieutenant order, but we both miss the mine trigger there. Ah well.I really need to do something about the Antipode pack and the Vet Kazak link as they’re both going to be quite troublesome. I drop a Hakim on the board behind the Kazak link, hoping I’ve correctly guessed which of Vassily’s two camo tokens is the real one. I’m right, and both the Vet Kazak and Frontovik fail their change face rolls. I want to keep them facing the wrong way for as long as possible, so I force bad decisions by running the Nasmat into base to base, threatening an Electric Pulse. Steven takes the bait and CC’s the Nasmat, letting me get a free unopposed SMG burst at the back of the Vet Kazak, which of course I roll all misses on. I don’t have orders to deal with this, and I don’t want to get into a gunfight with something that has a LFT within 8″ so I scurry away to go after the Antipode Controller, as planned. She and Vassily take the bait and fire at the Hakim, and I chain colt them both in the face.No one survives. With Vassily dead and no longer covering the right box, I run the Druze AHD over to grab the right box, and then return him to his original starting position. I don’t have the movement to get him prone, so he’s forced to stand there, butt exposed for all to shoot at. At least there’s no I’m down to my last order, and I try to break the link with Tarik by super jumping into view and  shooting at the Vet Kazak Paramedic holding the box, but I can’t roll for shit this game and nothing happens.Tarik lands in cover, and I’m forced to pass the turn.

Bottom of 2 – TAK

The Antipodes fail their WIP roll, but Steven spends a command token to cancel Retreat! for them. Vet Kazaks don’t super care about being in loss of lieutenant, so the link just trudges forward. Steven uses the AP HMG to detonate the mine, taking a wound.A few orders later and Tarik has been gunned down, freeing the remaining Vet Kazak Paramedic not holding a box to run into the armory and burn my Al’Hawwa off the table. I flub the shotgun roll in response–I had been hoping that I could’ve at least plinked a wound off the Kazak.Things are pretty rubbish for me at the moment, but at least Steven’s out of orders.

Turn 3

Top of 3 – Haqqislam

My turn to be in loss of lieutenant. I run the Asawira into the Armory and into close combat with the Vet Kazak Paramedic, and am rewarded for my trouble with a passed ARM save on the Paramedic and three failed ARM saves on Asawira versus flamethrower. UGH. I suppose I could’ve attempted a boarding shotgun shot instead, but even if I had made both shots Steven rolled a big number of his ARM save and would’ve at best been in NWI while I would’ve been still dead. Definitely the better option in theory though, since the Asawira BSG isn’t rocking a DA CCW. I want to get the Kazak off the table in the least number of orders, so two BSG slugs is the right tool for that. Noted and filed.

I’m down to two orders, one for the Ayyar and one for the Druze. I drop the Druze prone and hide him atop the sniper tower he started on, and then try to take out the Vet Kazak AP HMG with the Ayyar from within 16″. I take a crit to the face instead. Poop.

Bottom of 3 – TAK

The Vet Kazak finishes off my Ayyar, who heroically attempts to E/Mitter the Kazak. After picking up the Al’Hawwa’s box with his Paramedic, Steven has just enough orders to get the remnants of the Kazak link up the ladder to where my Druze is, and with his AP HMG’s Lieutenant order, guns down my Druze, simultaneously securing my HVT.That’s an

8-0 Tartary Army Corps Victory!

I ended the game with only the EVO on the table, so… thanks, for those 45 VP, EVO!

Notes

Notes for Me

  • No good reason to leave the Muyib out. If I was going to leave him out, I should’ve made an attempt to get rid of the AP HMG Vet Kazak with a simultaneous attack from something in a coordinated order. Didn’t really have a great way of doing that though.
  • First time fielding a Kum Biker. Seems fine, and of course much better against things that don’t have shock.
  • Not sure if I should’ve chain-rifled the Scout instead of throwing a smoke grenade. It ended up not mattering, but I was really hoping to land that money chain rifle on the Antipode pack on my turn. Chain rifle was definitely the more conservative play, and I think that’s what you need to do in LI games.
  • Probably not worth sinking so many damn orders into Tuareg sniper on my first turn. What would’ve been better is to try to snipe Voronin 1-2 times, and then just leave the Tuareg there to be a giant pain in the butt and force Steven to come dig it out. Next time, definitely going to drop a mine first, then shoot at the link since surprise shot doesn’t matter, then just leave the Tuareg there to be annoying.
  • This would’ve also let me retreat the Al-Hawwa further, which was definitely part of the reason I lost the game.
  • The effectiveness of Ayyars is severely degraded against Vet Kazaks due to SSL2 canceling Surprise Shot L2.
  • I asked too much of Tarik this game, and probably shouldn’t have been so aggressive with him.
  • Super happy with the performance of my Hakim, in spite of flubbing all the SMG shots against the Vet Kazak Paramedic.
  • Druze are great. It’s a lot of toolkit to put 4″ forward. Ended up not mattering, but I liked the feel of it on the table, knowing that I at least had some viral for those antipodes.
  • Definitely need to remember that when facing Antipodes, deploy such that they can’t fit their bases where you’re hiding. That was basically all that saved my Druze’s bacon.
  • Pretty dumb retreating the Tuareg. I totally forgot about that scout on the roof. Need to be much better about dropping mines and stuff! That would’ve been a pretty different game if I had seeded that corridor with mines as I went after Voronin.
  • Well, if there was any doubt that this was a random list… :: points to EVO :: Not sure what I could’ve done to leverage that more. Re-roll spotlight against Vet Kazaks, I guess? Hooray? I’m all ears if anyone has ideas.
  • All in all I felt pretty good about this game. I made some suboptimal choices, but aside from leaving the Muyib out to die didn’t make any horrible mistakes. Just lots of little ones in deployment and order expenditure that got punished.
  • Will definitely have to think some more about how to leverage single HI with BSGs. The random list generator seems to love giving me those.

Notes for Steven

  • A reminder the Vet Kazaks ignore loss of lieuteant. No need to spend all your command tokens converting. Ended up not mattering at all, just something to think about.
  • Great work positioning Vassily, and some sweet moves with the link. Also great list.
  • Also, great work just playing straight to the objectives and relying on your Vet Kazaks to get you there.
  • Looking forward to our next game! Thanks for a fun one!

Game 2 – Supremacy

Adam’s turn to play, so I got the Bye for this round. Here’s a brief summary of what happened:

Table 1 – xammy versus zelaponeepus

  • Forces: NCA (xammy) versus ALEPH (zelaponeepus)
  • Highlights: Proxy Mk 4 continues to be beef jerky, stalling NCA out for awhile.

Table 2 – SimpleKnight versus Nehemiah

  • Forces: NCA (xammy) versus ALEPH (zelaponeepus)
  • Highlights: Dr. Worm takes a Trench Hammer to the face. (Editor’s Note: And there was much rejoicing!)

Table 3 – White_Lang versus DarkApostle

  • Forces: Yu Jing (White_Lang) versus TAK (zelaponeepus)
  • Highlights: Antipodes ate the Yu Jing Lieutenant

Table 4 – TheDiceAbide versus RomanLegion

  • Forces: Combined Army (TheDiceAbide) versus ISS (Roman Legion)
  • Highlights: Charontid Lieutenant eats an E/Mitter from outside of 16″ through a low-vis zone, while isolating a Su Jian that was coming around the corner to see it.

Game 3 – Random Rumble!

Yes, that is Hulk Hogan (Adam’s spirit animal?) ripping off this meteorologist’s shirt. Or at least attempting to. With a loss and a Bye each under our belts, Adam and I were facing off on the bottom table. This meant we’d each get to try out our second random list against each other. We didn’t waste any time and just got down to business.

Deployment

I picked table side, so Adam went first. He attempted to inferior infiltrate his Caliban Engineer, but failed, meaning the cocoon thingy hung out on his left table edge.  Both of his Suryats got placed in the middle of the table, watching each other’s backs. The Imetron hid on the right of the board, protected by a Gwailo with MULTI Rifle and a Kurgat Autocannon. The Sogorat AP HMG watched the left side and was flanked by an Aswang Spitfire. Adam put his lone Gaki (LOL) in the open, ready to run straight ahead and start slicing things with its arm blades.I stuck my Zhayedan HMG on the roof, synced to the Xenotech, figuring that I would at least be able to shoot at something important up there if it came to it. If not, I could probably at least use the Lieutenant order to drop the stupid multiscanner thing. My Naffatun watched the giant open area on my left, ready to flamethrower the Gaki if it made it too far. I put the Jannisary ML watching the Gaki’s approach, hoping to catch it as it walked by the Gwailo. The Jannisary BSG covered the ML’s back in case of surprise Fraacta or something. My right side was both of my Holo 2 guys, with Yasbir prone by some stairs on a catwalk, the Druze ready to fire a pitcher under the Sogorat, and the Ayyar tucked under the catwalk with his holoechos out to “ARO.”Adam plunked a Malignos down next to the left objective marker, and I responded by placing my own TO unit next to it, in hidden deployment.

Turn 1

Top of 1 – Combined Army

Adam canceled the Gaki’s order with a regular order, seeing either the Malignos or the Gwailo was going to get caught in the collateral damage of my Jannisary’s ML. He tried to remove the Jannisary ML with his Kurgat, but was JUST outside of 32″ after moving into view, meaning the Kurgat was obliterated by a missile to the face.Unwilling to attempt anything with the Gaki, Adam activated the Malignos and ran it across the field. I delayed with the Jannisary ML. What I should’ve done was delayed with the Tuareg and discovered with the Jannisary. What ended up happening was the Malignos made it to a corner within ZoC of both Jannisaries and within LoF of both my Tuareg and my Naffatun. I failed a discover with my Naffatun, then Adam declared idle, and I revealed my Tuareg to shoot at him along with the Naffatun. Adam split burst, killing both.Unfortunately, what should have happened was 1) Adam declares idle. 2) I declare delay with the Naffatun, and reveal the Tuareg’s TO marker, who also delays. 3) Adam is forced to put full burst into the Naffatun, giving me a normal roll against the Malignos. This would’ve been even better had I done it when still in good shotgun range as the Malignos walked by. Reveal the token and delay against the Malignos, and then discover with the Jannisary. UGH. Well, that’s what I get for not playing with TO often, and is exactly why I’ve embarked on this random list journey.

Anyway, the Malignos and my Jannisary ML do some dancing, firing combis and pistols each each other.
Eventually the Malignos drops my Jannisary ML and recamos itself. The Sogorat adjusts its position, killing a Yasbir and a Ayyar Holoecho as he does so.Out of orders, Adam passes the turn.

Bottom of 1 –  Haqqislam

Well, this situation is exactly what Hakims with Nasmats are for, so I bring one on and pick up the Naffatun with the Nasmat. The next order has me race the Nasmat forward towards the downed Tuareg and pick up the Jannisary ML. Adam elects to reveal the Malignos to take out the Nasmat.I run the Hakim into cover and LoF of the Malignos, then scoot back into total cover, but even a point-blank shotgun can’t beat a combi crit. The Jannisary BSG does what the Hakim couldn’t and blasts the Malignos off the table before retreating himself back to his starting position.I spend my Lt order advancing the Xenotech towards the central tech coffin and then pass the turn.

Turn 2

Top of 2 – Combined Army

With the Jannisary ML out of LoF, Adam is now free to advance the Gaki, getting it all the way into base to base with the Naffatun after two move-move orders. It passes all its ARM saves against the Jannisary’s BSG and the Naffatun’s flamethrower, leaving both of us surprised and at a loss for words.Adam advances the Aswang, gunning down one of Yasbir’s holoechos on the way. Now that nothing’s watching it, Adam recamos the Aswang and then pushes it forward towards Yasbir.Yasbir and the Aswang face off in close combat! I elect to contest the roll with CC instead of a Nanopulsar, using MA 3 versus Protheon L2. This Yasbir’s and the Aswang’s target numbers at 16 and 18, respectively. We pick up our dice, giggling like madmen, and…
both roll 20s.Adam tries again with the Aswang, beating out my roll this time, but I pass ARM. Unsatisfied with this result, he looks for an easy CC kill with the Gaki versus my Naffatun, but I manage to roll a 4 to his 3!Sadly, my Naffatun’s knife is unable to penetrate the Gaki’s armor, and it’s a stalemate on that side of the table as well. Laughing away his frustration, Adam passes the turn.

Bottom of 2 – Haqqislam

I attempt to land my second AD troop of the game. I pick a great spot, dropping an AHD right behind two hostile heavy infantry, and in ZoC! Of course I flub the roll spectacularly. My Ragik AHD deviates in front of a MULTI Rifle and a boarding shotgun, but thankfully they either miss or I tank the round on the Ragik’s ARM.I need to get my Ragik out, so I advance my Ayyar to take out the Caliban engineer, shocking him off the table. I manage to push the button on the right while I’m at it. The Ayyar is now underneath the Sogorat. With only one ARO to worry about, I move the Ragik to cover, trading fire with the Suryat MULTI Rifle. I hit, but fail to wound.I’m down to two orders now. I use the first one to land three viral pistol shots on the Sogorat from behind. Of course, Adam makes 5/6 of the BTS saves. UGGGGH.My last order is spent getting my Jannisary ML back into the fight to cover the left side of the field and popping the Druze out to fire a pitcher under the Sogorat. All this happens while my poor Naffatun is fending off a rabid Gaki.

I spend my Lieutenant order to drop the Multiscanner and get the Xenotech into base to base with the central Tech Coffin.

Turn 3

Top of 3 – Combined Army

The Gaki fails to take out my Naffatun, again. Adam pushes everything forward, piece by piece. The Suryat MULTI finally finishes off my Ragik with some shock ammo. The Gwailo does the same to my Jannisary ML with some AP ammo, getting into base to base with the left antenna and dropping the Multiscanner with his attached Xenotech. The Sogorat guns down the Ayyar, who did the Holoprojector trick to move out of the doorway. Unfortunately, his new position was visible from a bit further up the catwalk, which is exactly where the Sogorat walked to. At this point, the Sogorat is watching most of the field, while both Suryats are in base to base with the Tech Coffin in the center. My Druze AHD has been frantically smashing buttons on his hacking device, but to no avail against the Sogorat’s advance. Adam’s last order throws the Gwailo, Suryats, and Sogorat into suppression.

Bottom of 3 – Haqqislam

I don’t have much in the way of options, so the Druze goes to work. He guns down the first Suryat, catching it out of cover. He then shoots the Sogorat in the back with a viral pistol, doing what the Ayyar couldn’t.I attempt to remove the last Suryat with my Lieutenant’s HMG, but can’t scratch the paint on his armor.
I spend my last two orders on coordinated orders with the Druze and my Jannisary BSG, trying to flush the Suryat off the central objective while getting my Druze into base to base with the right objective. The Suryat tanks all the shots and just sits there, blazing away in suppression.Adam’s got his Datatracker on the central objective, giving him a

6-2 Combined Army Victory!

I can definitely say that this was the most fun I’ve ever had coming in last place at a tournament. I can’t wait for my next random list game! (Also, a funny TAK-on-TAK fight happened in round three, ending in a 0-0 Tie, thanks to camo spam on both sides.)

Notes

Notes for Me

  • I deployed a little funny this game, in part because there was a wall across the middle of my deployment zone. It ended up being okay, but I just didn’t have the orders to get my Jannisary BSG up there safely.
  • Single Janissary ML is great! I wish it had a better backup gun than a pistol, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.
  • What a truly silly amount of failed CC attempts this game. I guess it goes to show you how high-variance single die attacks are.
  • Viral pistols are my new Favorite Thing.
  • Oh how I wished my Zhayedan HMG was the Breaker Rifle version…
  • The Ragik deviating sucked pretty bad… it might’ve been better to bring it in on the left to snag the left objective, or maybe attempt a drop in the center to deny the Suryats… but the Sogorat was watching most of the central field.
  • I’m really starting to dislike singleton HI BSGs. Which means I need to be forced to use them more so I can figure out what makes them tick.
  • I actually really liked this list. I think the Ayyar E/Mitter + DEP profile is my favorite, but the Shock Marksman rifle isn’t bad. Not a huge fan of the sniper version.
  • Definitely messed up with the Tuareg. Well, that’s why we do these things.
  • Hakims rock. I think I should’ve marched the Jannissary around the corner instead, but I was trying for order efficiency.
  • Hooray for Druze!

Notes for Adam

  • Well, you did a great job leveraging what you had. Lots of tying me up in CC, which didn’t completely break everything but it did sort of guarantee safe orders in each of our pools, which is a weird thing to say.
  • Those Suryats are hard to shift! Not having a higher burst weapon that can safely outrange the Suppression was quite difficult. I think I did the best I could’ve on Turn 3, but I spent too much time futzing around in the back on Turn 2 with the Ragik and the Ayyar to really get set up for a win.
  • Losing the Ayyar suuuucked. I was going to rely super hard on that guy to clear out your Suryats…
  • Great game, as always.

I primarily play Infinity and Heavy Gear nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.
