Statuesque Guard

I had some trouble choosing what to play for game night… was waffling between playing my QK or Bakunin. Daniel was my opponent though, and he was playing Vanilla Haqq, so I decided to play Bakunin for some table variety. I wanted to play something I don’t usually play, so I threw in the Uberfall, and with all the excitement about the LGL Druze I threw in a Moira E/M LGL… and it was a great thing I did…

Deployment

Daniel chose to go first, so I had him deploy first. We’re using my little neoprene forests as saturation zones, which would reduce the effectiveness of my link teams, but I think it worked out for me by shaving a burst off of Daniel’s Maghariba Guard. Daniel spread four Mutts across his deployment zone with Ghulam FOs behind them (sans the Ghulam Doctor, who was the leftmost Ghulam from his perspective). Daniel’s Lasiq commanded his left of the table up to the midfield, backing up his Khawarij also on the left. Finally, Saladin tucked himself into a nook in the backfield.I chose my side for the deployment zone, so I tried to make the best of it. I stuck the Moderator link team on top of the central buildings, with the Paramedic and MSRs up top and the Spitfire and Lt down below. I figured I’d better have both MSRs watching the central firelane due to all the saturation zones. I stuck the Haris on the right, tucked in cover but sort of watching the right firelane. I may have overdone it a little, but I stacked up the Moira and the Riot Grrl on the left, figuring I would kill the Mutt there, and that would allow me to sweep the left flank. What I didn’t notice was that Daniel had put a TO camo token and a regular camo token on my left. Whoops! Off my game, I guess. In any case, having two strong units there would help me deal with them. I stuck my two Zeros on top of buildings to help me control quadrants, figuring that I could use them to surprise shot stuff and clear out some chaff like Mutts if they got close.
I didn’t really know where to put the Uberfall, so I just blobbed them up on the right, and I stuck the Morlock in the open on the left, which has always been a bad idea in previous games but it’ll be different this time, right? I ended up rolling 8-4 MOV, easily my favorite roll on MetaChem L1.And surprising no one… Maggie was Daniel’s reserve.

Turn 1

Top of Turn 1 – Haqqislam

Daniel’s 4 Muttawiah advance, but either beat out my shots with smoke or make their ARM saves. I may or may not have taken one out with one of the Moderator’s MSR, it’s a little fuzzy at this point. There definitely were at least three alive at the end of Daniel’s turn though.

Now that the Mutts are in a good position to start boxing me in, Daniel brings in the big guns. Maggie stomps into action, slicing the pie to take on my Moderator link team one by one. The first one that Maggie can see is my Moderator Paramedic, so rather than take one combi rifle shot on a 7 through a saturation zone, I elected to dodge. I fail my dodge, but the saturation zone reduces Maggie’s burst so I only take one hit. I roll a 15 and fail guts, dropping the Paramedic prone.Daniel proceeds to take on my other two Moderators, this time the ones with MSRs. He manages to take them on one by one, but has to leave cover to do it. With the better rangebands ont the MULTI Snipers, I elect to fire back. Daniel sneaks through another pair of shots, one for each Moderator. Miraculously, even rolling with my dice cup, I roll two more 15’s! I drop them both prone and thank my lucky stars.Daniel needs to secure his two closest quadrants and advance his forces, so he runs his Khawarij into the midfield on my right, provoking a smoke grenade out of my Morlock. The Khawarij trades some fire with my Custodier Haris but no one takes any hits. The Haqqislamite soldier ends his movement prone behind a little barricade, out of LoF.After advancing his Mutts a little under cover of smoke, Daniel throws Maggie into suppression and passes the turn.

Bottom of Turn 1 – Bakunin

Well, a Mutt is parked right up next to my Morlock, and I didn’t want to get isolated or chain rifled. The Uberfall were in a similar situation-if they ran out, they’d get lit up by Maggie’s suppressive fire. To prevent the needless loss of my close combat specialists, I burned two orders to cancel their impetuous moves. Daniel’s got me boxed in super well, with Mutts lurking in my quadrants and Maggie locking down the central firelanes. I need to slash a hole in his web of AROs so I can take and hold the closest quadrants at least.

I start by using the Moira’s MULTI Rifle to shock the leftmost Mutt pinning my Morlock off the table. Now I’ve got a safe path to get her E/M LGL within 16″ of Maggie, so I waste no time and get her straight into that range band. I’m fully prepared to sink the rest of my turn into spec-firing E/M grenades onto Maggie, especially because I don’t see any engineers on the table. Thankfully, it only takes one order. Daniel drops Maggie out of suppression to dodge but fails. He goes fishing for a high BTS roll but only comes up with a 3 on his d20. Maggie’s out of commission, taking a huge pressure off my left and center.

I try to remove the central Mutt with my Moderators, but the saturation zone gives Daniel the edge he needs to just barely beat me out and land some smoke. I have no luck with the right Mutt either. That saturation zone is no joke! At least I use the order expenditure to stand the Moderators up and move them into the scoring zones.

I’ve got a small angle to take out the Khawarij with the Chimera, and it will just avoid the saturation zone. Sadly, Daniel rolls a crit and the Chimera goes down for the count. Thankfully, I kept the Pupniks outside of LoF so the Khawarij wouldn’t get a shot at them. I ‘m running out of orders now, so I set up for the next turn and drop a mine around the corner, hoping to catch the Mutt as it runs around the corner and cover the Khawarij at the same time.I force the Mutts’ next move by running my Morlock into the center with her 8-4 MOV, getting jammed through the Mutts’ smoke for my trouble.

Turn 2

Although Maggie is now a harmless but beautiful statue, she is still scoring. Daniel has his two closest quadrants, and I have mine, so the score is tied at 1.

Top of Turn 2 – Haqqislam

The right Mutt has to dive straight at the Morlock, who dodges. The Mutt tries to throw smoke, but my Moderator link now has their sights dialed in and everyone hits, blasting the Mutt off the table. The central Mutt tries to chain rifle my link, but the shrapnel bounces off and the Moderator Paramedic drops the troublesome pest! With that, all the Mutts are dead.

Daniel senses that my left flank is a little weak, with the Moira advanced and uncovered by the Riot Grrl. He capitalizes on the weakness and runs the Tuareg up the field and drops a mine covering both the Moira and the Riot Grrl. I declare engage with my Moira and dodge with my Riot Grrl to get her out of the way of the mine. I manage to engage, and the Riot Grrl scoots around the corner safely.

There’s a fair amount of points tied up in Daniel’s Lasiq, so he uses Climbing+ to advance his sniper to the next building closer to the center. He throws more points into his nearest quadrants, coordinating and order to move the Ghulams up. I manage to catch one in the open with the Moderator MSRs and it’s lights out.

Daniel sneaks his rightmost Ghulam (my left) into B2B with my Moira and tries to down her in close combat. My Moira’s giant sword isn’t just for show though, and she rebuffs the attack with ease. The Ghulam’s armor turns her blade aside though, so it’s a stalemate for now. Daniel throws some of his remaining Ghulams into suppression and passes the turn.

Bottom of Turn 2 – Bakunin

It’s time to flip a quadrant and secure a few extra points. My Morlock runs up and punches the Khawarij in the face. The Haqqislamite shrugs it off, but I have one more order left. That does it, and the Khawarij is down for the count. In this case the E/M CCW is less good, but I still love it. I’ve only got three orders for my Haris, which gives me just enough to get the Reverend Healer to the Chimera and pick her back up!

I race my blender made flesh up the field, in full view of the paralyzed Maggie, prompting much justified grumbling about AROs from Daniel. The Chimera climbs halfway up the wall and spec fires an eclipse grenade at the feet of the Lasiq. Now that the way is “clear,” I Climbing+ the rest of the Uberfall onto the roof and surround the poor Lasiq. Two crits and two hits from a Viral CCW later, the Lasiq is a puddle of goo on the roof, eliciting a laugh from Daniel, ever the good sport! I’ve got a few orders left, so I figure I’ll untie the knot that Daniel started tying on the left with the Tuaregs. I run the Riot Grrl into view of the mine and dodge successfully. I’ve got just enough orders to get the Riot Grrl into base to base with Tuareg and attack. A bit of deft knife work and the Tuareg is bleeding out in shock! With that, I pass the turn.

Turn 3

Maggie still is the queen of her quadrant, but I’ve got the other three thanks to the Riot Grrl’s bladework and the Uberfall’s butchering of the Lasiq.

Top of Turn 3 – Haqqislam

Daniel cracks his knuckles and goes to work. He rolls his Farzan around the corner and shoots into the melee. My Moira’s ODD confuses the Farzan and he ends up shooting the Ghulam in the back. My Riot Grrl takes out the Haqq traitor with a crit from her combi rifle. After pushing his last few Ghulams into better positions, Daniel passes the turn.

We look at the board state, and there isn’t a way for me to really gain or lose any more points, and it’s getting late, so we call it. Of course, we had forgotten to declare our DataTrackers, leaving a few points off the table. We both used the INTELCOM option, meaning it’s a

5-1 Bakunin Victory!

It’s been a few months since I’ve seen Daniel across the table and rattled dice around with him, and it’s always a pleasure. Looking forward to seeing this guy more, now that we’ve changed game nights to one that fits everyone’s schedule more.

Notes

  • Well, we forgot to use DataTrackers. Had we done that, I probably would’ve given one of the Haris members DataTracker, and Daniel probably would’ve given it to Maggie. That means +3 points for Daniel and +2 for me, making it a 7-4 game.
  • The Haris needs a few more orders than I gave it. Had I lost the Moira I would’ve had to rely on the Haris to take care of Maggie and I didn’t have the orders since they were on the wrong side of the table.
  • The Moderators did surprisingly well, but man, do saturation zones hurt, both ways.
  • 8-4 Morlock best Morlock.
  • Reverend Healer FTW!
  • The Uberfall are pretty sweet. I need to use them a little more aggressively, but there wasn’t a great opportunity this game. Next time, I need to give them access to a capable gunfighter to clear the way if necessary. I think something like the Riot Grrl would be appropriate.
  • I am very happy with my decision to burn two orders to cancel impetuous. It’s a delicate choice. Sometimes it may be worth risking the smoke grenade.
  • This was definitely a reminder to always take an engineer if you’re running a big expensive TAG. They’re really vulnerable to E/M.
  • Always check for small TO camo tokens! I totally missed Daniel’s Tuareg during my deployment… actually, now that I’m thinking about it, maybe it was part of his reserve? I dunno. I think that’s right. Meh! It worked out.
  • CC is a good answer to TO and ODD.
  • Riot Grrls are so toolboxy!

WiseKensai

I primarily play Infinity and Heavy Gear nowadays, but I dabble in plenty of other game systems.

  • A few months late, but a note that the Chimera has Structure and not Wounds; the Pupniks have wounds, so the Reverand Healer can’t fix her up. Not sure if you were made aware of this sometime in the future, haven’t read too many battle reps yet!
